TV analysts and money managers would have you believe your finances are enormously complicated, and if you don't follow their guidance, you'll end up in the poorhouse. They're wrong. For the past few decades, Americans have spent billions of dollars on personal finance products. As salaries have stagnated and companies have cut back on benefits, we've taken matters into our own hands, embracing the can-do attitude that if we're smart enough, we can overcome even daunting financial obstacles. But that's not true. In this meticulously reported and shocking audiobook, journalist and former financial columnist Helaine Olen goes behind the curtain of the personal finance industry to expose the myths, contradictions, and outright lies it has perpetuated.

A group of newly elected incoming House Democrats sent a letter to the party leadership this week. Among their demands: prioritizing legislation concerning health care, infrastructure, gun safety, the environment and other worthy causes over looking into President Trump and his administration’s corruption. “We are united in the belief that we have a mandate to debate, draft, and work across the aisle to pass legislation,” they wrote.

When it comes to the stock market, President Trump is in a box of his own making. He repeatedly took credit for 2017’s stock market gains, with the S&P 500 delivering a nearly 22 percent return. “Stock Market at new all-time high! Working on new trade deals that will be great for U.S. and its workers!” went a typical tweet, this one on July 15 of last year. “Highest Stock Market EVER,” he declared a few days later. I predicted this would not end well for Trump. “Should the American economy or stock market hit a rough patch, Trump will get stuck holding the bag,” I wrote late last fall.

"It’s Trump’s stock market now" is from the December 05, 2018 Op-Ed section of The Washington Post. It was written by Helaine Olen and narrated by Sam Scholl.
