Who Killed My Father rips into France’s long neglect of the working class and its overt contempt for the poor, accusing the complacent French - at the minimum - of negligent homicide. The author goes to visit the ugly gray town of his childhood to see his dying father, barely 50 years old, who can hardly walk or breathe: “You belong to the category of humans whom politics consigns to an early death.” It’s as simple as that.

Growing up, Édouard only knew his mother's sadness, as she found herself trapped in the humdrum life of a housewife, and her struggles against the dominant world of men. What happened in those years since the photo was taken? Then, at the age of forty-five, his mother frees herself from this oppression. She leaves her husband and her old life behind, to start a new one in Paris.

Ses rêves se sont heurtés à son monde et il n’a pu en réaliser aucun.

I met Reda on Christmas Eve 2012. I was going home after a meal with friends, at around four in the morning. He approached me in the street, and finally I invited him up to my apartment. He told me the story of his childhood and how his father had come to France, having fled Algeria. We spent the rest of the night together, talking, laughing. Med udgangspunkt i en række barndomsnedslag reflekterer Louis over farens liv, fra fødsel til social død. Det er en historie om en søn og en far, der ikke kan finde ud af at tale sammen, men også en historie om en mand fra underklassen, som vi ellers kun sjældent møder i litteraturen. Og det er frem for alt en kollektiv historie – en refleksion over måden politikere og deres beslutninger påvirker vores kroppe.
