"Sarrasine" (1830) is a novella by Honoré de Balzac, part of his Comédie Humaine. The stage is set around midnight during a ball, the narrator is sitting at a window. There is an unknown old man around the house, whom the family was oddly devoted to, and who frightened and intrigued the partygoers. When the man sits next to the narrator's guest, Beatrix Rochefide, she touches him, and the narrator rushes her out of the room. The narrator knows who the man is and says he will tell her his story the next evening.

At the beginning of the story the heroine lives an unfulfilled life in rural France, her nature crushed by a domineering and miserly father. Gallant cousin Charles arrives and acts as a catalyst on Eugénie's personality and emotions. This short text was of tremendous importance in the world of art, for it holds a groundbreaking reflection about artistic creation: what does completion or failure mean, and how is it that technique does not guarantee either. Le père d'Eugénie Grandet a été tonnelier. Grâce à un sens aigu des affaires et une grande avarice, il a réussi à faire fortune en profitant des événements de cette époque instable. Autrefois maire de Saumur, il fait maintenant fructifier sa grande fortune tout en faisant croire à sa femme et à sa fille qu'ils ne sont pas bien riches. Les habitants de Saumur, plus au courant de la fortune du père Grandet, voient en sa fille Eugénie le plus beau parti de la ville et la courtisent donc ardemment.

One of the greatest of French novelists, Balzac, trained as a lawyer, was a great judge of human nature. In 1833 he conceived the idea of linking together his novels so that they would comprehend the whole society in a series of books. This plan eventually led to 90 novels and novellas (including more than 2,000 characters) that he called "The Human Comedy". Balzac's huge and ambitious plan drew a picture of the customs, atmosphere, and habits of the bourgeois France.
