• “You gotta get in where you fit in” discussing the transition from legacy to legal weed with brand wizard Shooks Dynamo aka Shaka Wright
    Jun 6 2021

For our 31st episode I was joined by the amazingly charismatic Shaka Wright aka Shooks Dynamo.  Shooks is a self-professed ganja baby who comes from a long line of cannabis dealers in Jamaica.  Growing up around weed meant he had a very normalized view of cannabis which has followed him throughout life.

“Half of my crew got their names off of something that happened when we were high”

In this discussion we learned about Shooks’ early days of distributing cannabis and you might be surprised to hear how vividly he remembers the very first time he got high.  Having grown up watching his dad and uncles running cannabis, Shooks described the time police came to arrest his dad for dealing and the impact it made on his life thereafter.

“I saw how convictions changed a lot of peoples’ lives”

When legalization arrived, he knew he had to get into the cannabis game however the Canadian emerging industry didn’t make it easy. He applied literally everywhere and started to question his value until a glance in his junk folder changed things for the better.

“I wanna see these big players, I wanna see everybody get their returns and get out the way so that we can see the real growers”

“I wanna bring pride back into growing”

Today Shooks works for an LP promoting several different brands throughout Ontario's cannabis retailers.  He also does brand consulting and marketing promotion on the side.  You can find Shooks and his company Shooks Dynamo Marketing on Instagram at @shooksdynamo and @ganjababy.420

“I used to be so discreet. Now? I’m boasty as shit, if you could smell YOU COULD TELL”

  • "I began to find my power" a conversation with legacy CannaQueen Miz D (Danielle Jackson)
    May 30 2021

I'm thrilled to be joined by a such a powerhouse pioneer in the Canadian canna-tourism space for our THIRTIETH episode. Miz D is a not only a long time cannabis enthusiast, but she’s been a Vancouver-based cannabis educator, activist and consultant for decades. Having used cannabis since 1977, we learn extensively about the challenges and obstacles she’s faced as a Black woman using cannabis in western Canada in the 70s & 80s. Our listeners can expect to hear about both the bitter and sweet of Miz D’s cannabis journey. From her early days as a street kid in Vancouver, to hitchhiking across the country, you can just imagine the types of characters, and situations she would encounter in her efforts to secure cannabis during its prohibition. Her past careers include managing casinos on cruise lines, certified hypnotherapist and she’s also a reggae musician.

“I feel the approach is what creates the problem”

Miz D shares with us her thoughts on what Canada did wrong in their federal legalization process and current reality. We also learn of how she entered the cannabis industry in the previously nonexistent cannatourism market. Miz D is a true pioneer in the medical canna-tourism field and is currently in the Yucatan Mexico.

“Cannabis was a therapeutic tool, whether your intention or not was to use it that way”

While often dubbed the CannaQueen of Canada, Miz D also embraces her Stoner Chick culture fully. Our discussion really allows the listeners to hear about the importance of embracing the culture of cannabis when using the plant. When a neurological condition caused her to have to leave her career at sea, she began to look at what entrepreneurship looked like. She took things she was passionate about, like holistic wellness and combined it with her love for travel and cannabis.

“My kids and grandkids have a different upbringing with cannabis, it’s normal for them”

  • “I feel that I’m fluent in duck” a conversation with Bobby Sharma of the Big Sharm Show
    May 23 2021

For my 29th podcast episode I was joined by the amazing cannabis enthusiast, fitness personal trainer, media personality and host of the Bigg Sharm Show on the Clubhouse App: Bobby Sharma.

It seems only fitting that Bobby’s cannabis journey literally started over 1500 miles away from his Scarborough, Ontario home, on a high school spring break trip in Daytona Beach, Florida.  As a long time media personality & talk show host, Bobby is such an interesting guest who’s authentic about his cannabis experiences and growth.

His love of hip hop, NBA basketball and passion for adventure and learning makes both talking and listening to him, tremendous fun. Some examples of where our topics included WHO he would smoke with if he had the chance.

One of my favourite discoveries in our episode was learning how Bobby wakes & bakes each morning by a local neighborhood pond with an amazing regular smoke buddy, a duck.

Bobby Sharma can be found on Clubhouse, in the Big Sharm Show Club which features the popular Big Sharm Show’s Weed Wednesdays on Wednesday nights at 10pm.  On this show you’ll hear all kinds of crazy cool things – so make sure to check it out!

  • "That's your healing calling" discussing multi-generational medical cannabis use in Florida with Nikki Rouse
    May 16 2021

For our 28th episode we were joined by Nikki Rouse, not only a fellow Budsista, but also a photographer, cannabis patient and doula-in-training. She’s also a mentor/facilitator of the all-women online community called The Porch. During our discussion we learned about Nikki’s journey in cannabis which started as a sort of family undertaking when her son first approached her as a teenager about his cannabis use while self-medicating for anxiety.  Those early discussions led to deciding as a family to pursue obtaining their medical cannabis cards and Niki describes the family affair of collectively going to their scheduled clinic appointments.

While getting medical cards for three generations of family members was a somewhat easy decision to come to, obtaining them brought along its own challenges. For example, when Nikki’s mom became a medical cannabis patient, her healthcare providers elected to reduce her chronic pain medications without consulting her or providing alternative options.

Listeners will also learn about Nikki’s work in photography and her passion for learning about becoming a birth and transition doula and her amazing plans to integrate the two.

  • “There’s a ritual to smoking a spliff” discussing joint-rolling & navigating the Weed Man with entrepreneur Erica Edwards.
    May 9 2021

I’m really glad I was able to get together with my fellow Budsista and long-time cannabis smoker Erica Edwards.  In discussing her journey listeners hear firsthand the challenges that so many Black women faced when using cannabis, such as securing cannabis safely AND being able to find reliable product.

“Navigating the weed man was I would say a big challenge”

Since legalization in Canada women can now not only grow their own cannabis plants for personal use but we can also walk into dispensaries and make our own purchases instead of relying solely on the long-fabled Weed Man.

“One of the best things that happened was when my weed man was a woman”

Our discussion together allowed us to reflect on how significantly male-dominated cannabis sources and spaces have been in our community and how this can now change following legalization. In addition we learned about what inspires her on her various entrepreneurial businesses such as her cannabis pre-roll company Diva Dose and Embellished Dreams.

“The things we do are often ghetto or marginalized until white people do them”

    “There’s a ritual to smoking a spliff”

“Diva Dose was started because I love fancy things, I love beautiful things but I also love practical.”

You can find Erica Edwards on Instagram: @the_ericae @embellisheddreams @divadose

Erica Edwards can also be found on Facebook.

  • "I was looking for alternative ways to partake" with reiki healer & herbal tea company owner Tianna Brown
    May 2 2021

For our 26th episode I was pleased to be join by cannabis enthusiast, reiki healer and owner of the Autumn Sky tea company Tianna Brown

We discussed Tianna’s journey with cannabis and how becoming a mother prompted her to alter the way she consumed. While smoking is still her favourite way to consume, she also enjoys drinking her cannabis by incorporating it with her artisanal tea blends. Her favourite herbs to smoke and steep as tea include damiana, lavender, passionflower and rose.

Tianna is a mother, wife, reiki healer and while the pandemic has certainly had its impact, she’s become a pretty good cook and has mastered a way to infuse my favourite Moxies dessert: the white chocolate brownie.

You can find Tianna on Instagram @autumnskyreiki

Listeners will hear how passionate Aleja is about the importance of keeping access psilocybin mushrooms barrier-free as well as the need for us all to be intentional in our psilocybin use if we want to see psilocybin acknowledged and legitimized as a self-medication tool.

  • “It’s about time because EVERYBODY smokes weed” discussing multi-generational cannabis use with cannabis enthusiast Jason Mr. Burgz Fraser
    Apr 18 2021

Have you ever asked yourself how long it would take you to smoke an entire ounce of weed?  When asked, my next guest said he could smoke an ounce in 4 days.  For our 24th episode I’m joined by one of my oldest longtime friends, Jason Mr. Burgz Fraser.  I met Jason back in the ninth grade and our dads, grew up together too!

Our listeners will learn about Jason’s file-long relationship with cannabis which actually spans generations. A multi-generational Black Canadian with deep roots throughout Nova Scotia, Jason grew up around cannabis seeing his dad, and uncles smoking together in the front room.  We talked about his excitement at achieving the family milestone of getting to smoke cannabis with the ‘adults’ once he turned 18 years old.  That family tradition has passed on to his own children, and now Jason is cohost of a new podcast debuting this month called Gas Station Montreal where he and his cohost have every kind of conversation while using cannabis.
