Join us this week where Dr. Roman Gusztak, a pediatric anesthesiologist at the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Dr. Sebastien Turcotte, a PGY-2 anesthesia resident at the University of Saskatchewan, discuss the anesthetic care of patients with neurodivergent conditions in the perioperative setting from a physician's point of view. Roman Gusztak completed his BSc and MSc in Zoology and MD at the University of Manitoba followed by his anesthesia residency training at the University of Saskatchewan. He then completed a dual fellowship in pediatric anesthesia and pediatric intensive care at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is currently working as a pediatric anesthesiologist in Saskatoon. He is happily married and enjoys spending time with his four young children and gardening in his spare time.     Julian Tam is an adult respirologist and assistant professor at the University of Saskatchewan. He completed his Cystic Fibrosis Canada clinical fellowship at St. Michael's Hospital and lung transplantation fellowship at Toronto General Hospital. He is the clinic director of the Saskatoon Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic. He also cares for patients in the Saskatoon Lung Transplant Clinic. His academic interests include cystic fibrosis, lung transplantation, and epithelial physiology.

    Join us for grand rounds this week where Dr. Gemma Percival, a PGY3 anesthesia resident in Saskatoon, and Dr. Oksana Prokopchuk-Gauk, the Provincial Medicine Lead with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and an adult hematologist, discuss the use of albumin in the perioperative setting.


    Gemma Percival (MD, MN) is a third-year anesthesiology resident based in Saskatoon. She earned her medical degree from the University of Calgary and possesses a masters in Nursing Leadership and Management from the University of Toronto.


    Dr. Oksana Prokopchuk-Gauk is the Provincial Medicine Lead with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and an adult hematologist with the Saskatchewan Bleeding Disorders Program based at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. She completed her undergraduate and medical training at the University of Saskatchewan, followed by a Hematology residency in Calgary and Transfusion Medicine Fellowship in Edmonton. Dr. Prokopchuk-Gauk actively participates in provincial and national transfusion medicine committees, including the National Advisory Committee on Blood and Blood Products. Her research interests include identifying strategies to improve transfusion safety and blood utilization and optimize perioperative care in patients with bleeding disorders.

She completed her undergraduate medical education in her hometown of Saskatoon, then relocated to Winnipeg in 2015 for residency training in anesthesiology followed by subspecialty training in intensive care medicine. She is an assistant professor in the Max Rady Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine. Her current non-clinical interests include interprofessional medical education, critical events simulation training, and team dynamics during resuscitation.

These values are ingrained in her personal and professional endeavors, evident in her compassionate care as an RN and her advocacy as a Public School Board Trustee in Saskatoon for the past 8 years.
