Story
Millions of people are suffering from chronic illnesses that, unbeknownst to them, are the result of exposure to environmental toxins and infectious agents such as mold and Borrelia, which causes Lyme disease. Millions. Because the symptoms of these illnesses are so varied and unusual, many of these individuals have sought medical care only to be dismissed, as if what they are experiencing is “in their head”. Many (if not most) have tried to tough it out and continue to function without hope of improvement. Unfortunately, their illnesses are very real.

Since then, for life to exist beyond single-celled bacteria, it's the mitochondria that have been responsible for this life-giving energy.

Don't take too much Vitamin D it is dangerous! I started taking 20,000 IU a day-50X times the recommended dose of 400 IU a day. After about four months upped the dose to 50,000 IU a day or 150X the old recommended “safe” dose I then boosted it to 100,000 IU a day or 300 x times the old maximum safe dose! What happened over these last 10 months? Did I die? get sick? No! Just the opposite! High dose Vitamin D3 therapy over the last year-cured all my chronic conditions-some that i'd had for 20+ years!

A book I wish I could have read earlier
What did you love best about Why Isn't My Brain Working??
It made me understand, concretely, how the brain is in constant interaction with all parts of the body. Tthis interconnection is at the center of most health problems and must be taken into account in the search for well-being, and of course in all our remedial or preventive efforts. A malfunction anywhere often reflects a problem in the brain, and it in turn can cause further damage to the brain. Vaguely knowing that something might be bad for my health was not enough to me to act accordingly, especially in my youth, but knowing concretely how it would damage my brain sure would have been!
What other book might you compare Why Isn't My Brain Working? to and why?
Datis Kharraziac's book on Thyroid, another must. David Perlemutter's Grain Brain. They are all books that probe the deeper workings of the human organism.
Any additional comments?
If I had read this book twenty, ten, or even five years ago, I would be in hugely better shape today. I have read many books on various aspects of health, and I have invested a lot in all sorts of ways to improve my functional health, but without a deep and detailed understanding of the brain, it never came together for me, and my various attempts as well as those of numerous health practitioners, many excellent in their own domain, never coalesced into the good health I sought.

Fine, but very elaborate, content
I like the content of the book, but it's quite long, partially due to the many (!) case stories.
First of all, I dislike case stories presented in anecdotal form. Each time a new anecdote is told, one has put oneself in a state of mind to relate to that story. It gives a haphazard, jumbled-up feeling. you're listening to a list of dopamine's various roles in the brain, then the next moment you're presented with Liz, 27, who visited Dr. XX (one of Dr. Datis many students/franchise partners?) with problems of inattention, blah blah blah..." then before you know it, that story is over and he's moved on to listing the benefits of natural supplements, rinse and repeat.
Those case stories serve as testimonials. They are there, partially (I believe), to give you the feeling that this Dr. Datis fella is THE guy who can you YOU. He listens. He cares. Etc. Just be aware that he is VERY expensive.
It also feels like each and every issue with the brain is causing: inattention, moodiness, aggressive behavior, etc. So each list of "do you suffer from these symptoms" sounds ultra similar. My take on it: don't expect to be able to diagnose yourself from a book like this. You can't.
For the above reasons, I recommend getting the book, not the audiobook. And preferably the Kindle version. That way, you can search for your issues, keywords, etc – find what you need, and not have to bother with the many case anecdotes.

Dr. Datis Kharrazian should have narrated it!
What did you love best about Why Isn't My Brain Working??
Dr. Datis Kharrazian has an amazing grasp of how the the brain influences every part of the body & life & he is able to make it understandable to the "patient"/reader. He gives tips on how to improve brain function at home with no special equipment or supplements.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jackie. Her experience of years of incorrect diagnosis & treatment is typical of what most patients experience. Her improvement under Dr. Datis Kharrazian's guidance is typical only in his world, not in the "normal" medical world or even the "normal" functional medicine world.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Adam Verner?
Dr. Datis Kharrazian's voice reflects his knowledge & enthusiasm & holds the listener's attention totally. He is THE person to narrate his own work & I would buy it again immediately if I knew he was narrating it. Listening to someone else is boring & hard to listen to. It doesn't feel "real" or authentic, like something lost in translation.
Any additional comments?
The paper version is fabulous & I was looking forward to reading along while listening to the AudioBook, but impossible for me to listen to a "narrator". So disappointed that Dr. Kharrazian's voice wasn't there. I normally prefer Audio to written, but not by a "narrator" when the author really has a message & a voice that holds my attention.

Finally a doctor that thinks with science!
Dr kharrazian certainly thinks outside the typical medical model most doctors are boxed into. With 1000 scientific references he demonstrates logical processes by which he (and you can) solve complex health issues.
I've heard him speak before so it's a little weird hearing the book with someone else's voice. But it's a great way to reinforce the knowledge from reading the book.
I just wish the narrator would stop reciting the doctor's degrees. It's weird. Either just say "doctor kharrazian" or say what the letters stand for.
Other than that, highly recommend.

Ponderous.
15 hours of one case study after another from different doctors and after each one the Pysicans name and city and email address. Which I assume are all his buddies. At the end of the diagnoses the say they put the patient's on nutritional support and various compounds (?) with no explanations. After each segment the Doctors name (and they are numerous) the whole alphabet soup of thier letter degrees ever if they were cited several times previously.
After the 50th time you see the authors letters you can recite them along the narrator.
Regards the narrator, the ONLY reason I gave him 2 stars was I didn't want to raise the score for the book. Adam Verner gave a 5 star performance. It was the only positive aspect of this book for me.

Good information, would prefer print copy
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
good information for a lay person new to this topic. However at times the terminology can get quite technical and this is where a print copy would be easier because you can see how things, such as recommended supplements, are spelled. Otherwise it is difficult to look more into it or find it at a store.
Would you be willing to try another book from Dr. Datis Kharrazian? Why or why not?
A next step for somebody new to this topic would probably be to go into a clinic and talk directly about my specific situation.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Adam Verner?
yes
Did Why Isn't My Brain Working? inspire you to do anything?
yes, i am investigating to go to a local clinic referenced in the book to get testing

Book filled with incredible research that is easy to digest. It was read really well for a non-fiction scientific based book. I can't recommend it more for people looking for answers.
Which character – as performed by Adam Verner – was your favourite?
Great reader, engaging and interesting throughout.

Highly recommend this book no disappointment.
This book will be a book I'll keep going back to. The in depth knowledge about the brain is phenomenal and it makes perfect sense for a lot of health reasons we experience and come across without the blue print explanations from the general medical.
I invested in this book because I wanted to learn more about brain health, this book exceeded my expectations. Thank you!

Could have been done in less than half the time
This is a very interesting and relevant topic, but I don't think this is the best book covering it. - it takes far too long to make its point and is rather short on hard facts.
As one of the other reviewers has said, there is a lot of upfront introduction where the author talks about what will be coming later and this gets rather repetitive. Perhaps some editing of the early chapters could have ensured the key points were made more succinctly.
There is an abundance of case studies, too many I found, and the treatment given was usually very vague. Some of these seem to have been contributed by other practitioners and all of them finished with details of the case study author. It was like these sections had been added to the book from another source. This sounded odd and broke up the continuity of the narrator.

omg. bad.
struggling to finish. lost interest even before finishing one third of the book. his explanations are all vague. he claim to have all the protocols to help brain disorders but fail to tell us a more specific content.. all in all. not for me. i would rather read a book by medically trained neuro physicians than listening to this crapt.
