"Has your life here been so difficult? You seem to fail upward at every opportunity." So says Careena, the hag teaching Clyde Hatchett how to use magic. It certainly doesn't feel like that to Clyde, who's still got a day job scraping mud (at least he hopes it's mud) out of monster pits. And yet, Clyde's found himself at the center of a massive conspiracy to kill the Emperor. He's the only one with proof that could save the man, and take down an entire network of corrupt nobles, evil slavers, and power-hungry despots.

Story
Just yesterday, Ben was a petty criminal getting by on fleecing New York’s one-percenters. Today, he's got a new face, a new name, and a new world to navigate. And Ben’s thinking maybe this time around, he’ll use his skills at disarming and deceiving to help out people other than himself. Maybe. Watching a medieval City Guard fight off a 20-foot-tall ooze that crawled up from the sewers will make you think twice about life decisions.

Story
We join Montana, recently returned from an impromptu study abroad trip, a bit wiser, a bit broader in perspective, and a lot freaked out by the once-dead person who's currently in his bedroom. Possible zombie sightings aside, he's finally ready to take his job as Duke seriously. And just in time too - not only are the politics of the capital rapidly closing in on Montana's little valley holding, but there are also goblins to negotiate with. Plus, that cult threatening to take the lives of his citizens.

As usual, Montana Coggeshall is hell-bent on doing what's right, even if what's right isn't exactly what's wise. So he embarks on a quest to vanquish the corrupted ursus, a threat so large they could destroy the entire world of iNcarn8. Does Montana head out after months of training for cold weather conditions, amassing an army, and strategizing with his top aides? Not really. It's more like he just walks out of his holding one day with a guide and the members of his hirð. They're just a bunch of angry teddy bears, right?

On both sides. At the front is Lord Caticorix, a grade-A Imperial flunkey if there ever was one. He's clearly ridiculous, but the army he brought with him might not be. Publisher's Summary
It could all be over before it even begins.
Clyde Hatchett and the rest of the Skull & Thrones better play their cards right - otherwise their newly formed guild will fall in a war with the Iron Silents, the overpowered immortals fond of spawn-camping and, well, anything that puts them ahead.
So much for resting on laurels, huh?
To keep his dreams alive and his newfound family safe, Clyde is committed to do whatever it takes. His usual thieving tactics are all well and good, but this time he'll also throw magic, his ties to the prince, and even a few kobolds at the problem. He just hopes it'll be enough.

Another Entertaining Book In The Series
The Iron Silents are at war with Clyde Hatchett and his coterie and aim to wipe them out and, being immortal as his lonesome self, they clearly have the upper hand. What plays out is an intriguing set of adventures where Clyde is juggling many mini-challenges as well as attempting to prepare for the gang war between their two factions. Since Clyde's people are not immortal when one of them die, it's for real and as it happens, one of them do die. This event was well written in that it makes the story more realistic where Eric Ugland clearly understands that, as sad as it may be, key players need to die to impress that point. While it was all enjoyable, there were two issues I took with it. One, there was a new character introduced who seemed meant for a larger role but that was left hanging with little insight as to what that may be. [LIGHT SPOILER FOLLOWS]The last issue had to do with Clyde's method for imprisoning an immortal. They were left alone in an unbreakable prison without food nor water other than what came from re-spawning, where they would continue to die and re-spawn indefinitely. While they were cruel and vile, this punishment was inhumane and vile on its own. He should have left some means for them to atone if they chose, something like making toys or cloths for kids or some other way to better occupy their time rather than forced into cannibalizing themselves, die, rinse, repeat. Even so, it was well written overall and Neil Hellegers continues to perform flawlessly.

4/5
Love Eric Ugland and Neil helligers. truly an amazing team up. The way Neil brings a story to life is almost as incredible as the way Eric writes it. the characters are human, the dialogue is incredible. even the characters interrupting someone is unique to only this series. love that clyde has magic and the story is just so damn good. great stuff. 4/5 the reason for the 4/5 and not a 5/5 is as follows: I understand that with his drain spell clyde is gaining too many spells and abilities and I get the book is quick so eric can put them out regularly which I enjoy. heck there is alot do story and it cannot be all fights. what bothers me is how clyde never used certain spells. high level ones too. now ok I understand this may be to illustrate how he just has too many spells and can't remember. however clyde is very smart and could study a few of the high level ones correctly realizing they'd be badass then trying them in a fight. for example hold humanoid lvl 23 and hold monster lvl 30 something...maybe not as flashy as pulling out a bone but useful. there are a bunch of others that we be we get to see. I know you need to increase drama and not be boring but using at least some of his other spells would be nice. great great story. love ya eric and Neil. just down feedback. absolutely cannot wait for more

The little things
I love how he adds little things in to this series that had been mentioned in the good guys. like when Hatchet was asked if the kobold he is sending was going to steal a potion of intelligence. Took me a minute to realize why that sounded familiar. Love this series and the good guys series I'm always left wanting more!
