Publisher's Summary

New York Times Best Seller

"I gulped it right down. Excellent, as always.... Cornwell brings battles to life like no one else.” (George R.R. Martin, author of Game of Thrones)

The final installment in Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling Saxon Tales series, chronicling the epic story of the making of England - the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit Netflix series.

The final battle awaits....

The epic conclusion to the globally best-selling historical series.

England is under attack. Chaos reigns. Northumbria, the last kingdom, is threatened by armies from all sides, by land and sea - and only one man stands in their way. Torn between loyalty and sworn oaths, the warrior king Lord Uhtred of Bebbanburg faces his greatest ever battle - and prepares for his ultimate fate....

“Perhaps the greatest writer of historical adventure novels today” (Washington Post), Bernard Cornwell has dazzled and entertained listeners and critics with his prolific string of pause-resisting best sellers. Of all his protagonists, however, none is as beloved as Uhtred of Bebbanburg, and this thrilling historical novel continues the saga of his adventures and the turbulent early years of England.

Epic end to an epic series!

Wow. So many manly tears shed across all books and this is probably one of the most fulfilling and satisfactory endings to any series I have, in this case, listened. So many distinguishable characters. So many vivid scenes. So many great turns and memorable, plot twists that are not over the top and confusing. It was really hard to take a break from listening to do something else.
Also great Matt Bate's performance - from his voice, voice acting to clearly displayed emotions.
It was a great ride! It will be very hard now to find any other historical fiction set in the era to come even close to the quality of Bernad Cornwell.

Sad for it to end

I am so sad that this is the last book in the series but what a ride! Do you self a favor and head back to book one. You will not be able to stop.

epic conclusion that starts a little too campy

The book starts a bit too light, more like a made for TV book, but slowly becomes a typical Uhtred story. slaughter, strategy, reflection, bravery, fear and friendship.

Wonderful end to an amazing series.

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Last Kingdom" series. What a fitting, and frankly surprising end to Uhtred's story. His legacy lives on!

A fitting end to a great series by the master…,

Cornwell the bard, and Matt Bates his reader. It’s a delicious combination for this last novel of the series and Cornwell/Bates don’t disappoint.

Last of the Utred Books

This is just a fun to listen to as the other Uthred books but knowing it was the last in the series wish it had a different ending, I was not disappointed with the battles or betrayals just wished on my end after all of the talk about Valhalla the book would have ended with Uthred meeting all those he has slain in Odins drinking hall instead of as an old man in his bed

Great book

Masterfully written and finished leaving a smile on my face. I was a bit apprehensive of a poor ending after spending so much time on this story. Also enjoyed the historical notes following the story. I highly recommend this series of books.

Just finished and am breathless

The only reason I removed one star is the lack of continuity of narrators. I would have preferred the original narrator, but Matt Bates was a good compromise for the majority of the series. What a ride! I have been on an "Old-England history kick" ever since beginning this series! SO fascinating! SO much to learn!
