A thrilling and addictive new novel - a prequel to The Pillars of the Earth - set in England at the dawn of a new era: the Middle Ages

"Just as transporting as [The Pillars of the Earth].... A most welcome addition to the Kingsbridge series." (The Washington Post)

It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns.

In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined. A young boatbuilder's life is turned upside down when the only home he's ever known is raided by Vikings, forcing him and his family to move and start their lives anew in a small hamlet where he does not fit in.... A Norman noblewoman marries for love, following her husband across the sea to a new land, but the customs of her husband's homeland are shockingly different, and as she begins to realize that everyone around her is engaged in a constant, brutal battle for power, it becomes clear that a single misstep could be catastrophic.... A monk dreams of transforming his humble abbey into a center of learning that will be admired throughout Europe. And each in turn comes into dangerous conflict with a clever and ruthless bishop who will do anything to increase his wealth and power.

Thirty years ago, Ken Follett published his most popular novel, The Pillars of the Earth. Now, Follett's masterful new prequel The Evening and the Morning takes us on an epic journey into a historical past rich with ambition and rivalry, death and birth, love and hate, that will end where The Pillars of the Earth begins.

It’s been a long time but it was worth the wait. I love it. I may have to go back and reread the first one. They are my favorite books. Worth reading over and over.

Amazing

The recipe stays the same and while I have little doubt as to how the story unfolds and ends, I still find myself picking up the book whenever I get the chance and delaying the moment to put it away. The characters and the story are so well embroidered with the historical context that I keep yearning for more.
My favorite part is clearly how the author depicts Middle-Age England and France, the challenges of that time, the rules of society and the kinds of innovation bright spirits could inject into it. Being told the story of how Kingsbridge became the town we know from Pillars of the Earth is just the cherry on top.

The reader as usual does a great job. He uses enough voices that we can tell which character is speaking. A bit more variety for female voices would be nice but he gets the accents quite right and I think it matters more.

Another great historical drama by Ken Follett

Ken follet is an amazing writer and definitively a great story teller. it's the same again and again with this saga tough.
good people being good and bad people always being bad... and off course always a happy ending with the triumph of good over evil...

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed the Pillars of the Earth Trilogy. I am usually very happy with prequels and The Evening and the Morning measured up beautifully.

Not Disappointed

I don't love the topic, but it's very well written. Follett definitely knows how to tell a story.

it's not too bad, well written but not my favorite

Overall I enjoyed the story, and the performance was excellent. I did find parts of the story to be unnecessarily violent. In any story, you need to have the protagonist have some positive momentum, otherwise the story just feels overly weighed down. There were long sections that felt that way and I found myself struggling to get through the book. I did enjoy the ending so I'm glad I finished the story, but it was not always an enjoyeable experience.

tough to get through in places

I love Ken Follett's writing. The story just goes and goes and flows and never gets boring. I'm glad they're really long books because I always wish they go on forever.

Sucks You In Completely

I almost could not quit listening. He gets your attention from the beginning, sets up great characters, describes things so well, throws in so many surprises, and makes it all so believable. However, I struggle with violence and think that it could be a bit less graphically described here. Also, someone else in their review mentioned that the amount of sex made it seem x-rated and I would agree that it could be toned down too. There was plenty to keep you interested without that being needed. The story always has good win out over evil and basic moral principles upheld, so that was good. I recommend it with warnings of the sex and violence.

Fab story...but less sex and violence preferred
