Publisher's summary

Sometimes, your destiny finds you.

For generations, Lecantuar ruled over the desert city of Valmari as both their god and their king.

Ten years ago, that all changed. Vinail Quartes, a low-born man of the Gemani people, led a revolution that cast down the god-king once and for all. But even with Lecantuar bound in chains deep underground, his followers still plot to usurp the new king and return to the old ways.

Now, a decade after Lecantuar's fall from power, a young thief named Jerek has been given an impossible task. He must delve into the palace's dungeon and free the former god-king. If he fails, it will be the end of his life and the lives of everyone he loves. If he succeeds...it will mean war.

Viverra Mordhal, guard commander and daughter of the greatest warrior ever known in the north, will stop at nothing to protect her king and the city she calls home.

Can the world's most dangerous prisoner be contained, or will his power destroy all peace in the land?

Hidden gem

I absolutely loved this book and found it completely by accident, but am so glad I did! I really fell into the story, and enjoyed how things were explained along the way so there was a bit of suspense. I loved the depth of the characters, and how each seemed to have secrets that I was dying to find out! All together I LOVED this book and am so looking forward to the next. I also thought the narrator did a great job with both male and female voices and switching POVs throughout. Usually I hate male narrations of female characters, but this one was enjoyable.
