Publisher's Summary

Surrounded by fire, a girl with mysterious powers and a young warrior search for safety.

Life in the wasteland is a constant struggle. No one knows it better than Taimin. Crippled, and with only his indomitable aunt to protect him, Taimin must learn to survive in a world scorched by two suns and frequented by raiders.

But when Taimin discovers his homestead ransacked and his aunt killed, he sets off with one mission: to seek revenge against those who stole everything. With nowhere to call home, his hunt soon takes a turn when he meets a mystic, Selena, who convinces him to join her search for the fabled white city. Taimin and Selena both need refuge, and the white city is a place where Taimin may find someone to heal his childhood injury.

As they avoid relentless danger, Taimin and Selena attempt to reach the one place that promises salvation. And they can only hope that the city is the haven they need it to be....

YA Book

Just another YA book with a ignorant MC, the setting is in the dark ages tech of a fantasy world. It's bad enough most YA are socially awkward, now the author takes it one step further than that, and he has been basically raised around no one, constantly verbally abused by some aunt and left to fend more on his own.

I enjoyed this sags. nice and clean

This was a nice clean story without any of the usual bedroom scenes. nice interaction between different people and and races.
The narrator did a good job but could been enhanced with a female voice for those parts.

Little dragging but good.

I did enjoy this book. The story was right down my alley because I love sci-fi adventures. This world is full of mysterious creatures and beings and a truth that is hidden behind a firewall. honestly, the book was really enjoyable but it did drag at some points and was kind of boring at more points. It wasn't as action-packed as I would have liked. nevertheless, there were good characters and the narrator was a good listen. I would recommend it to any sci-fi reader and I can't wait for the next.

Depressing Story

There are many interesting parts of the story. Character development is decent and world building is good. However, there are more areas of the story that really bothered me. It is a hot arid land with two suns. The land never sees rain. Water is the most valuable and rarest substance. So how are trees and wildlife able to exist? There are no towns, no smiths, and only one city which has no water supply. So how are the steel daggers and swords made? How do hundreds or thousands of people live in a single walled city without water to ever bathe or water for lavatory facilities or water to clean clothes or water to grow crops or raise animals? Lastly, the two protagonists go from bad situation to worse situations one after another that it's frankly depressing. Although the narration is good, I do not recommend this book. Spend your money on something more fun and uplifting.

Didn't want my commute to end!

The story is well crafted, the characters are well developed, and I cannot wait to get the next one. I never wanted my commute to end and often ended up reading some after I got home.

I also love the performance of the reader. He used so many different voices and accents. Even when I was reading it instead of listening, I still used his voices in my head. Great job!

New epic Adventure

I love this story so much I've listened to it three times! I've had the others pre-ordered and waited for them to come out so I can listen to them all at one time! You don't need to do this he does NOT leave it on a cliffhanger or anything like that I just wanted to wait.

👍

I've read and listened to all of James Maxwell's books and I love them all and Simon Vance is one of my favourite narrator's so this book was a must listen and I've been waiting for all 3 books to be released before starting. I wasn't blown away by the book and I found myself board in parts but overall was enjoyable and I loved the ending. it's got me thinking what's going to happen in book 2.

Uninspired

A very generic read with unimaginative characters and a predictable and uninspired plot. fine if you enjoy mindless entertainment
