Story
The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world's greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire.

Publisher's summary
Greed, revenge and world domination are just some of the ingredients in this James Bond adventure. After oil tycoon Sir Robert King is killed in a bombing at MI6 headquarters, his daughter, Elektra, inherits his fortune and the attentions of her father's killer. His name is Renard. A bullet lodged in his brain has rendered him unable to feel physical pain, and he has but one reason left to live - revenge. There's only one man who can take the heat between a beautiful heiress, a malicious sociopath and his final diabolical plan, agent 007.
Featured Article: No, Mr. Bond, I Expect You to Drive—A James Bond Cars List
When people talk about the most memorable aspects of James Bond novels and movies, there are so many things to list—his famous quotes and drink preferences; beautiful women and dastardly villains (which are not always mutually exclusive); all those fun spy gadgets, like poisonous wrist darts, shoe daggers, and ring cameras. Certainly, there's no doubt that James Bond gets all the good stuff—but he's especially spoiled when it comes to cars.

It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

The other guy should call Doug a jerk, Doug should say, "my bad", and they should both paddle back out and move on. Problem is, the other surfer doesn't want to move on. He wants to fight. And for once in his life, Doug wants to fight back.

Story
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Bond Like It's 1999 All Over Again
Raymond Benson returned to novelize his second Pierce Brosnan Bond film with The World is Not Enough. Unlike Tomorrow Never Dies, where that film's chaotic production and frequent script rewriting gave Benson freedom to expand rather sizably on the film, this one didn't offer as much opportunity. That said, where Benson can, he turns what was arguably Brosnan's best Bond film into a fuller work. There is an even greater emphasis on the romance between Bond and Elektra King in the first half, including an expanded casino sequence where the closeness between the two becomes all the more apparent. Benson also expands on the backstory of the villainous Renard, with his journey from a young Russian soldier to the terrorist kidnapper of Elektra explored in a chapter late in the novelization.
Simon Vance, as narrator, offers a solid reading of Benson's prose adaptation. His characters are distinct, including fine versions of Bond and the Judi Dench M, though his Renard sounds closer to Steve Carell's Gru from the Despicable Me films than Robert Carlyle's film character. His narration is solid, though even he can't make Benson's descriptions of the action sequences work, as I found myself rewinding during them trying to pick up details I'd missed out on (despite being familair with the film version).
Even so, The World is Not Enough's novelization makes for a solid listen. Especially if you're a Bond fan of the Brosnan-era films or Benson's brand of literary 007. And, besides, how often can you listen like it's 1999 all over again?

Good bond book, made better by a great villain.
The best bond books have memorable villains. This one is great, and I wish more had those special quirks.

The World Is Quite Enough
Benson was not invested into this story and it shows. His lack of detail definitely is noticeable compared to the other Bond novels. Its quite a shame as this story is a great one.
