Publisher's summary

Book three of the Ciaphas Cain series.

An old rival, infighting with fellow Astra Militarum regiments and the small matter of a cult devoted to the Chaos God Slaanesh derail Commissar Cain's hope for a quiet and uneventful mission.

Ciaphas Cain's latest mission takes him and his Valhallan regiment to the planet of Adumbria to defend against an approaching Chaos invasion. However, infighting with fellow Imperial Guard regiments from the world of Tallarn, commanded by an old 'friend' of Cain's from the Schola Progenium and the uprising of a sinister cult on the planet puts paid to any hopes of an easy life.

Narrator’s audio outtakes literally left in

Good book but there are a few places where you can hear the narrator mess up on his lines a few times and try again. Really jarring and kind of broke the immersion so hopefully they push an update to fix this.

Besides that though, this is classic Ciaphas Cain. My one complaint about the story is it kinda makes chaos marines seem a bit easier to kill than one would expect but that’s just a minor nitpick.

Another great book

I truly enjoy these readings of Cain. Although the editors missed a couple of mistakes by the reader. Not his fault.

Incredible writing

I spent years as an infantry officer and can say without a doubt that Mitchell hits it on the head perfectly. From the fog of war, to personnel, NCO officer relationships, etc. Clearly he has done his research. Also Kane is an incredibly enjoyable character who’s foibles never cease to entertain. The most amusing part is that Kane actually is the hero he claims not to be.

Another master piece

Started laughing my ass off when he made fun of the Gaunt’s ghosts novels with the phrase “do you want to live forever”, another master piece by Sandy Mitchell

Breath of fresh air

The entire cain series subverts expectations of the 41st millennium in the best way. My favorite 40k series by far.
