Publisher's summary

A contemporary adventure based on Mayan mythology from Rick Riordan Presents!

Zane Obispo spends every day exploring the sleeping volcano in his backyard. "The Beast", as he calls it, is the one place where he can escape other kids, who make fun of him because he has a limp and walks with a cane.

After a twin-engine plane crashes into The Beast, a mysterious girl named Brooks shows up at Zane's doorstep, insisting that they meet at the volcano, where she will reveal a terrible secret. Zane agrees, mostly because beautiful girls like her don't usually talk to him. Brooks tells him that the volcano is actually a centuries-old prison for the Mayan god of death, whose destiny is directly tied to Zane's. No way, Zane thinks. He's just a 13-year-old nobody, and destiny or no destiny, he wants nothing to do with any of it, especially some god of death.

But Brooks opens his eyes to the truth: magic, monsters, and gods are real, and Zane is at the center of an ancient prophecy that could mean the destruction of the world. Suddenly finding himself entangled in a web of dangerous secrets, Zane embarks on a quest that will take him far from home and test him to the very core.

Feisty heroes, tricky gods, murderous demons, and spirited giants are just some of the pleasures that await in this fresh and funny take on Mayan mythology, as rich and delicious as a mug of authentic hot chocolate.

Amazing story!

This story takes awhile to get into and one really needs to stick with it and give a second or third chance. And if your expecting the Rick Riordan style it will be there if you stick with and just give a chance

wonderful

the plot is easy to follow and an absolute joy to read. It's a blend of Mayan myth with a hilarious character arrangement. I absolutely can't wait for the next book!

Fun in our own back yard

Best suited for readers who are part human, marked with a deformity, and on the outside of mainstream society, with a hankering to hear same kind of boy's tale of frantic battle with slobbering Mayan demons. Standard western backyard barbecue, complete with volcano. Standard themes: absentee dad, chosen one, mysterious heartthrob "girl", bullish catholics, chase scenes, slime. Oh yes, tears for the dog. Similar in theme and style to Nick Gautier (Chronicles of Nick) and Percy Jackson, with a pacing like Bobby Pendragon and other DJ MacHale books.

HOLY K!!

This is simply amazing! The voices were so amusing and flawless, even when Ozzie had to produce girl voices. The actual book had so many twists and turns, and will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time. The ending took me by surprise and I'll admit when it ended I was running around the house squealing. TMI? oh well. Anyways, I definitely recommend this. I take it on dog walks, car rides, and even when I'm just sitting in my room. It allows me to be productive while still enjoying an incredible story. 5 stars all the way!!!

good

I liked it. :-) good and clean, no weird sex, cussing or anything just Mayan monster stuff. I just kind of weird pus filled and smelly. I want to read and or listen to the rest of the series. when the narrator was doing the main character he sounded kind of like he had a cold, it didn't sound like a cold with most of the other people.... so that kind of drove me bonkers sometimes.

Solid All Around

This book was very much written in the same formula Rick Riordan used before he got overly political. I really enjoyed this book. It's always entertaining to hear about a new set of "gods" and mythology, as I was unfamiliar with Aztec lore. This book was easy to read with no real dead points...There were enough characters to get to fully know, but not too many to make your head spin. The narrator was also very solid and a good fit to the story. I haven't read JC Cervantes before but definitely will read more by her going forward.

Not Just More Mythology Bull-Crap

This is great it is mythology which is awesome but nowadays there is just so much scrappy works about it. I am happy to say this is not one of those pieces. it is interesting and keeps you wanting more. Also the readers voice is fitting he is clear and he doesn't mispronounced words.
