A sinner’s only hope is true love in this passionate new novel in J.R. Ward’s #1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

Syn has kept his side hustle as a mercenary a secret from the Black Dagger Brotherhood. When he takes another hit job, he not only crosses the path of the vampire race’s new enemy, but also that of a half-breed in danger of dying during her transition. Jo Early has no idea what her true nature is, and when a mysterious man appears out of the darkness, she is torn between their erotic connection and the sense that something is very wrong.

Fate anointed Butch O’Neal as the Dhestroyer, the fulfiller of the prophecy that foresees the end of the Omega. As the war with the Lessening Society comes to a head, Butch gets an unexpected ally in Syn. But can he trust the male—or is the warrior with the bad past a deadly complication?

With time running out, Jo gets swept up in the fighting and must join with Syn and the Brotherhood against ultimate evil. In the end, will love true prevail...or was the prophecy wrong all along?

Critic reviews

"Set in a world in which vampires are living unbeknownst to humans, this action-packed story starts at full throttle. Narrator Jim Frangione quickly draws listeners into the action. When Syn, a vampire, encounters Jo, a reporter, he feels an immediate bond with her. But she is unaware of her status as a half-breed vampire. Frangione gives Syn a deep, powerful voice that suggests his well-muscled physique. As the war between the vampires comes to a head, another vampire, Butch, is leading the battle. Butch is from Boston, and Frangione gives him such a classic Boston accent that listeners might imagine him sporting a Red Sox cap. The audiobook is packed with tension, passion, and moments of humor, and Frangione easily negotiates the varied emotions."

The relationship followed somewhat of an expected route but that's not to say it wasn't satisfying. The character development felt on point and thus even though you could see where the relationship was headed and where the bumps were going to occur, It felt right for it to happen that way. There was only one spot that felt forced just a bit but it was almost necessary to keep the relationship on track without adding undue meandering to the characters' arcs.

Additionally, not to give away spoilers but, it was nice to see a new conflict get thrown into the mix. The twist caught me off guard. You have to love it when the author can throw a curveball you simply don't see coming until it smacks you in the face. Forcing you to pause the story and stop listening while your brain takes a moment to rework the story's potential outcomes because everything you thought you knew was going to happen is now totally invalid.

Last and definitely not least, I don't know that I could listen to this series performed by anyone else. Jim's voice is synonymous with this series for me and I wouldn't have it any other way. The characters are unique without being overly portrayed and everyone is still easy to understand.

Thank you, J.R. Ward and Jim Frangione for another great addition to the series. I eagerly awaiting the next.

18th installment in this series and still amazing

The Band of Bastards seem more serious than the Brothers so Syn does not have the humor or lightheartedness we have come to expect. I appreciate greatly that Ward writes unique characters so I am totally ok with this. Lassiter is almost always good for a few laughs. Also the subject matter outside of the romance is very, very serious, There is a huge shift in the entire series story arch. I enjoyed Syn and Jo, but felt their connection was second to everything else going on. Ward's later books in this series are more diverse in the story telling and you get time with several characters and not only focus on the main love interests. I truly loved getting to visit all the other characters.

As always Jim Frangione is perfection- we got so lucky we have him for all the novels.

I don't want to spoil anything but know that for any BDB fan this is a truly amazing -and surprising- listen.
