In the shadows and flames, Primals will fall…
And from the blood and ash, new gods will rise.
What was dreamt.
Poppy was never meant to awaken, and the consequences are devastating and far-reaching, stirring ancient powers from their slumber and transforming Casteel and Kieran in ways even the Fates couldn’t have foreseen. But what that means is the least of their concerns. For now.
What was foreseen.
The Blood Crown has fallen, but what has risen is a far greater danger than they’ve ever faced. From flesh and fire, the Great Conspirator has returned to the mortal realm, and he wants only one thing. They must stop the true Primal of Death before he regains his strength, and it won’t be easy. Even weakened, his influence is undeniable. His power, unthinkable.
Has come to be.
While the future of the realms rests upon them, they won’t stand alone. The gods have awakened—each harboring their own blood-soaked secrets. But they must navigate an unbalanced realm, where every choice—past and present—has the potential to not only undo everything they’ve fought for but also destroy the very bonds that have Joined them together.
For the Harbinger and the Bringer of Death and Destruction has risen.

What I minded was how JLA totally destroyed Cas, Poppy and Kieran's relationship and Cas was getting ganged up on by BOTH the people who are supposed to love him. As if he's unstable and weak, when Poppy's ego and willingness to go it alone, forcing Cas to stay back when he NEVER once forced Poppy to stay back when she was weaker, etc. THAT means I was on Cas's side all the way. He had every right to feel hurt over their lack of trust, I FELT that lack of trust... He respected and trusted Poppy once they finally got together and put her first without taking away her choices the entire time. She did betray him.
And instead of TOGETHER, as it should have been, and kicking ass together, she went alone, Kieran sided with POPPY and her egotistical orders about it had to be her, only she could do it, only SHE was allowed to sacrifice herself *eye roll*, Cas was a weakness, blah blah blah and how she didn't trust Cas to keep cool when he always put aside his ego and wants aside for Poppy.
THAT part is totally ruining this series that was once my favorite. This book should have been about Cas and Poppy growing as a couple and Kieran being the voice of reason and loved by both, and instead... this?
I'm not even to the end, I know it's another cliffhanger, and I'm devastated their relationship is basically ruined for me right now. Cas and Poppy had their faults, as any good romantic couple does and I even loved how totally focused and unhinged they were on each other, willing to put each other first. But respecting and accepting each other were never one of their flaws! I didn't even mind the Kieran part of the plot, it just added to their love in a different way.
But this... this may have ruined everything for me.
This was supposed to be the finale and I'm disappointed.

The story? I can get behind a long story. I have loved this series for that. I love the complexity of the characters and the intermixing relationships.
Casteel nearly ruined this whole book for me. Fair? Maybe not. But as a main character, the nightmare that he became in this book took over the entire story. I found it very hard to root for him. For most of the book, I was actually bhoping Kieran &/or Poppy would just put him in his place.
I almost didn’t finish it. Casteel is a nightmare.

Lastly I'd say that the sex scenes could've been cut in half. When an author relies on sex excessively in a story it begins to get annoying and less rewarding to read. It begins to give bad porno vibes vs something tantalizing and realistic of an adult relationship. Overall making me skip through it and getting in the way of what could be a more epic well though out tale.
I know JLA can do better than this and look forward to what she has in store for us next!
