For 300 years, The Pilgrim's Progress has remained perhaps the best-loved and most read of devotional fictions. In plain yet powerful and moving language, Bunyan tells the story of Christian's struggle to attain salvation and the Gates of Heaven. He must pass through the Slough of Despond, ward off the temptations of Vanity Fair, and fight the monstrous Apollyon. In Part II, his wife and children follow the same path, helped and protected by Great-heart, until for them, too, "the trumpets sound on the other side."

An encouraging book to read, although I think I would need to read it many more times to really grasp it well.

Pilgrim's Progress is an allegory of the Christian life--the call to flee from the City of Destruction to make the journey to the Celestial City. It is a severe undertaking, with a cost that is far outweighed by the joy that lies ahead. It is a "Dangerous Journey," as the children's edition is titled.

I have read the physical book at least twice, possibly thrice, and just finished my third listen to the unabridged Audible version, the last two being back-to-back. And I know I'll listen again in 2019... Reading it is like a journey into a diamond mine, or into the mines of George MacDonald's Curdie--filled with precious stones found in increasing measure with each re-read. I find it gives flesh to great eternal truths.

It has been a life-changing book for me.
