Publisher's summary

Number One New York Times Best Seller •

Number One USA Today Best Seller •

Number One Wall Street Journal Best Seller •

From number one New York Times best-selling author Daniel Silva, this summer’s hottest thriller.

Now you see her.

Now you don’t.

THE NEW GIRL.

A new thriller of deception, betrayal, and vengeance.

She was covered from head to toe in expensive wool and plaid, the sort of stuff one saw at the Burberry boutique in Harrods. She carried a leather bookbag rather than a nylon backpack. Her patent leather ballet slippers were glossy and bright. She was proper, the new girl, modest.

But there was something else about her....

At an exclusive private school in Switzerland, mystery surrounds the identity of the beautiful raven-haired girl who arrives each morning in a motorcade fit for a head of state. She is said to be the daughter of a wealthy international businessman. In truth, her father is Khalid bin Mohammed, the much-maligned crown prince of Saudi Arabia. Once celebrated for his daring social and religious reforms, he is now reviled for his role in the murder of a dissident journalist. And when his only child is brutally kidnapped, he turns to the one man he can trust to find her before it is too late.

What’s done cannot be undone....

Gabriel Allon, the legendary chief of Israeli intelligence, has spent most of his life fighting terrorists, including the murderous jihadists financed by Saudi Arabia. Prince Khalid - or KBM, as he is known - has pledged to finally break the bond between the Kingdom and radical Islam. For that reason alone, Gabriel regards him as a valuable, if flawed, partner. Together, they will become unlikely allies in a deadly secret war for control of the Middle East. The life of a child, and the throne of Saudi Arabia, hang in the balance. Both men have made their share of enemies. And both have everything to lose.

Filled with dark humor, breathtaking twists of plot, and an unforgettable cast of characters, The New Girl is both a thrilling, pause-resisting tale of entertainment and a sophisticated study of political alliances and great-power rivalries in a dangerous world. And it is once again proof that Gabriel Allon is “one of fiction’s greatest spies” (Kirkus) and Daniel Silva is “quite simply the best” (Kansas City Star) writer of foreign intrigue and suspense at work today.

Typical Daniel Silva (marvelous story)!!

The editor's summary does not do this espionage thriller justice. But since this is the latest novel in Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon series maybe the publisher believed that selling was unnecessary.

Certainly Silva is a master on the espionage thriller genre, but possibly more important he is a master of humanizing his characters. As I listened to THE NEW GIRL the humanity of his characters, strengths and imperfections of both the good guys and the bad, struck me again and again.

The story itself is ripped from the headlines, but changed and fictionalized in important ways. Allon has been head of Israeli intelligence for some time but he is not just placed behind a desk. He is still an agent who goes into the field and gets his hands dirty. He has a freedom of decision making that he never had before becoming the chief. In this novel he develops a close friendship with the crown prince of Saudi Arabia. Allon remains a tragic character who lost his son and the companionship of his wife (who is still alive but beyond repair) to a terrorist attack. He now has two young children with his much younger current wife Chiara.

As is typical of the Gabriel Allon series there is a lot of movement from country to country. There are always new characters as well as a bevy of repeating characters. I was pleased that Sarah Bancroft appears once again as a major character in an Allon novel.

THE NEW GIRL is fast moving. The writing is polished and the details are consistent. My complaint about early audio novels in the series was inconsistent narration caused by narrator changes. Since George Guidall to over series narration in 2012 that issue vanished. Guidall performed this novel flawlessly.

THE NEW GIRL is an excellent addition to the Gabriel Allon series.

I wish I could rate it higher

The release of a new Daniel Silva book is always time for excitement. Now, three days later, I’m saddened that I’ve finished it.

Vintage Silva and vintage Allon. At the beginning, as great as the book is, I was worried that the books have become too formulaic. But then I didn’t care. The story swept me in and that’s all that mattered. The similarities to the Khashoggi story are chilling and explained by the author in several interviews and the Forward. What I like about Silva’s work is that any piece of it COULD happen.

In this book we have some of the old team which is always good. Even Sarah Bancroft makes an appearance (that’s not giving anything away.) There are two spots in the book where my heart stopped: In a field in France and at the very end.

I would have liked more with Chiara and the children. I bet Gabriel would, too.

As usual, the audio narration by George Guidall is beyond compare. He is one of the absolute best. And so is Gabriel. I am sorry that we have to wait a year for them to be together again.

Another Amazing Adventure

The Summer is here, July is upon us and that can only mean that the time has come for another Gabriel Allon adventure from the #1 New York Times Best-selling and award-winning thriller author Daniel Silva. This year’s book is the 19th in this amazing series of thrillers and it’s called The New Girl.

I listened to The New Girl in one session, ignoring work, phone calls and I canțt remember what I eat while listening… My immersion was complete from the introductory chapter to the last word and I am left wanting for more, as always…

The famous Gabriel Allon and the supporting cast of much loved of characters are back for another heart pounding adventure in the treacherous world of espionage, terrorists, kidnappers and assassin’s. I always appreciate the level of humanity the author brings up in his vivid characters and this is one of the main reasons I return to this series every year.

Gabriel is now head of the secret and feared Israeli organization known as The Office and at the request of an old friend he must work with old enemies to find a missing girl, but as one things leads to another in his world, Gabriel and the team will be pulled into a very dangerous situation very fast…

The action moves swiftly from Geneva to New York, from historical Israel and the United Arab Emirates to France, to Spain and continues at breakneck speed for the entire adventure. We meet trained spies, deadly special operators, unwilling accomplices, hateful individuals, innocent victims and a very scary plot seemingly ripped out of today’s news…

The audiobook version of The New Girl is brought to life as a great narrative experience by one of the best actors, voice over artists and narrators in the Audiobooks Industry. His name is George Guidall and if you are familiar with the Audies Awards you’ll probably remember that he won one Audie a few years ago as Best Male Narrator of the Year for his performance of The English Spy: Gabriel Allon, book 15, also by Daniel Silva.

The amazing George Guidall delivers The New Girl in a calm, soothing and familiar cadence. He uses many different voices and always appropriate accents for all the characters and by doing so it keeps everyone clearly differentiated in the listener’s mind. You will just know who is speaking by the French, Israeli, Spanish, American, Russian, British or Arabic accents employed in his excellent performance.

He is one of my favourites narrators of all times and in my mind he is Gabriel Allon, Sheriff Walt Longmire, Mitch Rapp and The Gunslinger from the Dark Tower series.
It feels like I listened to George Guidall my entire life, although there are probably just 14 or 15 years since I listen to audiobooks, I love his reading style and I consider him part of my beloved family of narrators with whom I spend long and satisfying hours every day!

Daniel Silva is one of my favorite thriller and espionage authors and he continues to deliver great entertainment with his latest novel, The New Girl, which I highly recommend to everyone familiar with his works and to those who want a good thriller in the likes of Mark Greaney, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn.

Apologia for MBS

Silva's novels are all 3 parts fun and adventure to one part political screed. (A few of them get the ratio wrong.) To use the screed part of this one to try to rehabilitate the murderous dictator of Saudi Arabia is to make this the Alon novel most will wish had not existed.

I wanted more....

This was my first Daniel Silva book. The book is not about “the new girl“. I feel a little bit deceived because of the title and synopsis. “The new girl“ is a very small part of this story about espionage, foreign policy, foreign intelligence. For those “in the know“ it is more about the death of journalist Khashoggi, the politics behind it, difficult decisions that leaders make, horrendous and horrific policy of other cultures That being said it’s a well-written story not predictable in its twists and turns author actually does the unthinkable with parts of the plot.
In short it does make me want to explore more Silva. It is better than nothing But not the best thing I’ve ever read.

The New Girl

Would not recommend this book personally I did not like it. It did start sounding an interesting mystery book but soon after it becomes boring.

Great book, terrible reader

This is a suspenseful up-to-date book full of intrigue and clever twists utilizing my drone characters. Unfortunately the reader is very poor and sometimes difficult to understand

Rapid-fire pacing

I enjoyed this story! it was a little bit difficult to listen to because it moves so fast. I often found myself rewinding to figure out what was going on and who is who. I felt like the narrator was just firing off the text with little emotion sometimes, like reading a travel log. But overall, it was a good book!

Very hard as a listening book

There are so many foreign names jumping out constantly, that this is very hard to follow as an audible book.
