Publisher's summary

London, 1865.

Vera Sorokina loves reading the Penny Dreadfuls and immersing herself in tales of adventure, mystery, and romance. Her own days are filled with the often mundane work of running the book and print shop she owns with her father. The shop offers her the freedom and income to employ and protect the poverty-stricken Londoners she’s come to care about, and it gives her father something to do other than long for their hometown of St. Petersburg. She is grateful for the stability in their lives, but she often feels lonely.

Brogan Donnelly was born and raised in Ireland but has lived in London for several years, where he’s built a career as a Penny Dreadful writer. He has dedicated himself to the plight of the poor with the help of his sister. His membership in the secretive Dread Penny Society allows him to feel he isn’t entirely wasting his life, yet he feels dissatisfied. With no one to share his life with but his sister, he fears London will never truly feel like home.

Brogan and Vera’s paths cross, and the attraction is both immediate and ill-advised. Vera knows from past experience that writers are never to be trusted, and Brogan has reason to suspect not everything at her print shop is aboveboard. When the growing criminal enterprise run by the elusive and violent Mastiff begins targeting their area of London, Brogan and Vera must work together to protect the community they’ve both grown to love. But that means they’ll need to learn to trust each other with dangerous secrets that have followed both of them from their home countries.

The funnest language & books in this book

I love books that have real history to them. It could be the tiniest amount. How people talked, what foods they like, or how they dressed. This book brings all characters to life. Especially the South Londoners. That’s the new language you will love learning throughout this book of love, adventure, crime, & drama. Not to mention the books in the book you also get to read!

The best so far!

I’m so excited for this series to continue!!!! I don’t want to ruin it, but this was a fantastically written story! Now I want to read real penny dreadfuls like what Sarah has written. I’m gonna have to look around for some.

To Sarah- thank you for not giving up when the story got rough for you! As a fan I almost jumped for joy when I saw the audible release! I love listening to your work. Please keep this series going.

Another winner

I enjoyed the latest installment of this series. Again, I didn't listen to the Penny Dreadful stories. I just don't care for that kind of content. But I enjoyed the main story. I was afraid there wouldn't be enough interaction with the Dread Penny Society members for me, but thankfully that wasn't the case. Justine does a good job with thr different accents. I am glad she has read all of these so far because that way the characters that appear in multiple stories sound the same!

Third and Thrilling

Once again, the author doesn't fail to keep us in suspense and veils the characters in mystery until it's time for us to know more. I cannot WAIT until the fourth is released! Go, Sarah!

Great series!

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening through this 3rd book in the Dread Penny series! This one ends a little abruptly, but that only makes me more excited to start the 4th. I love that the characters set up in the first two books continue to be a part of the following books and more is revealed in the larger story of the Mastiff. I liked the books so much that I gave copies of books as gifts to others.

Interesting story

This was outside my usual genre, but I enjoyed it. It was the story of a woman of Russian descent, living in London, and an Irishman also living in the UK. There is an overarching concept of the “penny dreadful,” kind of a horror serial, and examples are included. The accents were well done.
