Publisher's summary

In the eyes of London Society, Gillian Phelps is suitable enough. Though the ton whispers about her change of residence, any speculation remains just that: ballroom gossip. No one—not even the other Huntresses, the group of ladies she calls her dearest friends—knows that she is harboring a devastating family secret. Gillian has become adept at hiding the reality of her circumstances, but the close quarters of a house party will test her ability to conceal the crushing truth. And with so many people to deceive, the late arrival of another guest is a most unwelcome surprise.

Despite his standing as a gentleman of the ton, in truth, Scott Sarvol possesses little more than two debt-riddled estates. When an opportunity arises to survey one of his properties, he travels north, only to find himself an unwitting guest at Artemis Jonquil’s house party. He is warmly welcomed by all—except the aloof Miss Gillian Phelps. But when Scott proves himself unexpectedly helpful in a crisis, his acquaintance with Gillian shifts from wariness to something warmer.

As both her charade and her feelings for Scott deepen, Gillian realizes that the truth could spell not only a devastating fall from Society but also a shattered heart.

Definitely not my favorite

Although this has ties to the Jonquil family, it’s not nearly as good. I love her novels but this is the first one I could have done without.

Wonderful continuation of the Lancaster Jonquil Family

I really enjoy this narrator. She does a wonderful job!
I learned new information about ton expectations and biases.
This love story was fun and depicted well how people that are not blood relations can be our family. It also showed that even in difficult situations a solution can be found if you are willing to ask for help.

Love this author

I have read all of SME’s books and love them all. I enjoy this series, and look forward to more to come from the huntresses; hopefully Charlie’s group of friends too. Hope Springs is my favorite series by this author.

Loved it

4.5 stars
I love this world of Jonquils and friends. I love the tight knit connections and the fact that the Jonquils "save people". The main characters in this book aren't Jonquils except by Lady Jonquil adopting people into her circle of loved ones. I love seeing favorite characters from previous books show up in the more recent releases.
I've read the book (twice) and now listened to the audiobook and find I enjoy it more with each reading. The story of Gillian and Scott was full of angst since through the whole book, the path to their happily ever after was not obvious. Not to the characters or the reader. Of course Ms. Eden finds a way for them but it took a while to get to it. Both of them have been scarred by people who should have been their support systems and it caused a lot of self doubt which didn't help their cause.
I loved how perceptive Scott is about others, particularly Gillian, even when he isn't so perceptive about himself.
I did still wonder in the end, what the deal is with Scott's mother... I was hoping we'd find out more. Maybe it will come up in a coming book. Speaking of which, I am looking forward to the next in this series.

Great story

It kept my interest and ended well. I loved the characters and am mystified by the ridiculous rules. They are lucky I didn’t live in that time.

One of my favorite historical romances

This is one of the best historical romances I’ve read lately. There was just the right amount of mystery mixed in.

Boring

It was a very boring story. Couldn’t wait for it to end. Absolutely no excitement.

Unsophisticated

Agree with everyone who has commented on this story's characters lacking depth. Very limited, weak development of both plot and characters. Narrator is also a miss ~ inelegant for a regency. I don't plan to continue this series and would suggest you to save your credit.

Normally a fan…

I typically enjoy regency romances and Sarah Eden as an author. But this has to be one of the worst I’ve ever read. The characters were simple to the point of being insipid and dumb. There was no depth to the characters or the plot over all. Each of the main characters had suffered emotional and physical abandonment, which is something that on the surface sounds like it would bring greater meaning to the book…. But it didn’t. It was handled in a very simple and superficial way. Save your credit for a different Sarah Eden book.

Elementary and predictable

The reader was terribly bland and the accents just made it worse. The script was basic and redundant. All of it had a Whiney obnoxious overtone. That being said for a 12-15 year old female audience it would probably be just fine. I had come to expect more from this author though.
