When Persephone Lancaster receives a marriage proposal from the ill-tempered Duke of Kielder, she refuses - and then reconsiders. The obscene sum of money he's offering Persephone would save her family from ruin. With her characteristic optimism, she travels to the far reaches of Northumberland to wed a greatly feared stranger.
Lodged deep in a thick forest infested with wild dogs, the Duke's castle is as cold and forbidding as the Duke himself, a man with terrible scars on his body and his soul. But the Duke's steely determination to protect his heart at all costs is challenged by his growing attachment to his lovely and gentle bride. With caring persistence, Persephone attempts to pierce the Duke's armor and reach the man beneath. Yet, he cannot tolerate such exposure, and his repeated rejections take their toll. But when grave danger arises, the Duke realizes he must face the risk of revealing his true feelings or lose the woman he cannot live without.

now onto the narration. I am no narrator so this is only based on my opinion, and experience as a listenner, I have no knowledge of the profession. but I do not understand how this narration made its way onto audible. I have never heard anything from this narrator before, so I don't know if all her narrations are like this but this was so awful. I almost gave up on the book completely so many times because of the narrations. the voices of the characters are never consistent. I never knew who was speaking based on the voices, and even the different voices she tried were so bad. she would really do well to work on that. thankfully I could rely on "Adam said" and "Harry said" but the inability to do the voices properly and consistently made conversations very confusing to listen to. she read very fast for my taste. I had to slow down the audio to .90 speed in order to follow. also, while I didn't mind so much that the narration was in an American accent, when she tried to do a British accent when the characters were speaking, it sounded so bad. it was so awful. i just wish she would have stuck to an American accent. it would have been better honestly, even if it is a story based in Britain with Brittish characters. i can't explain how this was a narration by a professional, how this was accepted by the superiors or if anyone even heard it before it was uploaded. this felt like robbery. how someone could be paid for a narration this awful is beyond me. I will make sure not to listen to anything by this narrator again. it almost single handedly ruined the book for me. I was this close to giving up on it several times, if it wasn't because I really wanted to see how the story played out, and because I had already spent the credit, and didn't want it to go to waste, I would have.
I don't know if anyone made it this far on the review, but if you still want to listen to the audiobook, by all means please do. the story is worth it. just do your best to ignore the flaws of the narration. if you can, you will probably still enjoy the story
story is worth it, if you can get past the perform

Harry lightens the story with humor. The characters are all well developed.
However, it's the internal monologs that explain the walls both Persephone & Adam build in an effort to protect their hearts.
Both the writing and the narration are well done. A historical romance I recommend you add to your library!
