Publisher's summary

Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles? Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you'll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. The KonMari Method, with its revolutionary category-by-category system, leads to lasting results. In fact, none of Kondo's clients have lapsed (and she still has a three-month waiting list). With detailed guidance for determining which items in your house "spark joy" (and which don't), this international bestseller featuring Tokyo's newest lifestyle phenomenon will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home-and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire.

4 bags and counting...

There were quite a few useful ideas and I agreed with the main concept. Some of it was ridiculous and impractical like emptying your handbag every night and talking to your possessions, but I do agree that letting go of the clutter from the past and only keeping the things that spark joy is completely freeing. I got rid of 4 bags of clothes last night.

Complements other books on decluttering

If, like me, you've read other, more practical books on decluttering and organizing, you may find this book a nice change of pace. Marie Kondo offers a uniquely Japanese perspective on the objects that we hold sacred and how we should take care of them. She delves into the emotional side of clutter. And while some of her ideas could seem a little "New Agey" to Western ears, the basic essence of her technique transcends culture. I found it inspiring, and plan to put it to use. The narrator is exceptional—very emotive and easy to listen to.

Simple and inspiring

Such an easy read. Started on clothes before I even finished the book and so pleased with the result. If you need some inspiration and would love to declutter feeling nothing but gratitude and relief rather than dread or anxiety- read this book!!
