Exciting, portal-invasion SF with a kick-ass FMC and an amazing dog

Adeline is a 40-year-old divorced mother of two children, who are more important to her than anything on Earth. Ten years ago, before interdimensional portals opened up and spewed rampaging monsters, she was happily married with a 7-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son. But the day after the breach wars began, her husband abandoned her and their children. Soon after, along with countless other humans, she developed a magical talent. Hers is unique and highly prized, and it led to her offering her services to the US government to help save the planet from the invaders.

I have never been a fan of science fiction in general, but I love the SF by Ilona Andrews. This writing team are my all-time favorite authors. I will follow them anywhere. They have never disappointed me, and this fabulous novel is no exception. I was absolutely riveted from start to finish. Ada is a dynamic FMC. She is an honorable, compassionate survivor who never gives up, no matter how impossible the odds. Her relationship with the German Shepherd, Bear, is a core feature of this plot. I love stories with companion animals, especially dogs. Ilona and Gordon are huge animal lovers, and their portrayal of Bear is both authentic and heartwarming.

It is clear from its setup that this is the first book in a series, which I am extremely happy about.

Unique and fun storyline

This book was good from start to finish. I will definitely be looking forward to the next book and hope there are several more to follow.

New world, connected to Inn series?

Both narrators were excellent. The world and magical set up were clear. I like the connection to Sweep of the Inn series. Overall length seemed short, but I’m looking forward to sequel.

Amazing

Another smash hit from Ilona Andrews! The male narrator was especially excellent, and although I wasn’t sure about the female narrator in the beginning, I came to realize that she really fit the role well. My only complaint is that the book hangover is so strong and we don’t even have an estimated release date for the sequel yet.

I want more!!!!! thank you for making this a series and not a novelette. I can wait until the next installment!!!
