On a sunny May morning in 1998 in Cortez, Colorado, three desperados in a stolen truck opened fire on the town cop, shooting him 20 times; then they blasted their way past dozens of police cars and disappeared into 10,000 square miles of the harshest wilderness terrain on the North American continent. Self-trained survivalists, the outlaws eluded the most sophisticated law enforcement technology on the planet and a pursuit force that represented more than 75 local, state, and federal police agencies with dozens of SWAT teams, U.S. Army Special Forces, and more than 500 officers from across the country.

This is the first in-depth account of this sensational case, replete with overbearing local sheriffs, Native American trackers, posses on horseback, suspicion of vigilante justice and police cover-ups, and the blunders of the nation’s most exalted crime fighters pursuing outlaws into territory in which only they could survive.

I don't like the way this is delivered, I don't like that it starts at the end, one of those "if he had known" sort of things. But it's history, so it already happened. But still, I just don't like this style. So in the end I just stopped listening. I'd have to be desperate to work up the interest to start again. I am sure it is a compelling read for people who are closer to this story, but to me it's just another story about a the bad end some people I'll never need to care about came to.

My mistake - just not that interesting

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Very wordy in some parts.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Well since it's a true story, I think just the way it was told didn't capture my attention.

Would you be willing to try another one of Arthur Morey’s performances?

No, I'm not sure if he has some sort of accident or what? He also seems to always be talking in a hushed whisper.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

This book would probably make a better movie.

Any additional comments?

Narration really ruined it for me.

Meh

Well written true crime in the arid west. An amazing story of an ambushed policeman and the chase to catch his killers.

Only complaint was that when the author presented his theory of what happened he did not always day how he reached his conclusions. Much of it was from police reports, etc. but some of our was not clear. Overall a great book.

Modern day western meets true crime

While the book has well supported theory, the reference to .233 cartridges is an error.

A good story. The author failed in one point

Where does Dead Run rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's definity in the top three of all the audiobooks since my new fetish with audio began. From start to finish it was an easy listen for me. I have been spoiled by Kevin Pierce but this narrator did exceptionally well!

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The after action investigation regarding the motive or not so apparent motive. Captivating to say the least. It has the touch of new and old history regarding criminals past and present. This book told a crazy story of right wing militia and the devastating effect on the Cortez community.

What about Arthur Morey’s performance did you like?

Mr. Morey's performance was terrific as noted above I'm a huge fan of Kevin Pierce but he did a very good job. Easy to listen to and qutie good at cadence...

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The part of the book was the response and investigation into the lives of these three monsters death, leaves you wondering.

Any additional comments?

if you would like a story that you could listen too in one setting, this would be it.
