Publisher's summary

This is an up-close look at the lives and work of the brave men, women, and dogs who serve and protect citizens in America and around the world. An acclaimed poet, Rachel Rose never expected to spend her nights careening along the roads in high-speed chases or searching the woods for armed suspects. Yet once she decided to meet the people who devoted their lives to police K9 units, she found herself signing up for the ride-alongs, training runs, and other challenges faced by these courageous people - and canines - on a daily basis.

In this book, Rose introduces listeners to police dogs and their handlers in the United States, Canada, Britain, and France, where their group's official name translates as "the dog lover unit." She is there to catch a criminal with Constable Matt Noel and Blackie, to patrol with Sheriff Gene Davis and Gunner, and to witness the tragic funeral of Constable Dave Ross, where K9 Danny follows the coffin, looking for his master.

With insight, humor, and awe, this book reveals the feats that these human and canine teams accomplish and the emotional and physical risks that they take for one another and for us.

Interesting

This book was interesting but was not what I expected. I thought it would be more about the dogs than her.

Learned more than expected

Very interesting for many reasons. Learned much about dogs which I was sure I knew a lot. Of particular interest was e me the dog units in England and France. Any dog crazy like me should enjoy.

Amazing

A truly engaging multifacited story. Allows you an imside view to the lives snd dedication required of those who dedicate themselves to K9 Officers and the love and stamina needed to complete not only their ongoing training but successful service to us all. A wonderful and compelling read. Very well done even the narration, kept me coming back for more.

Interesting insight into K9 police units

The author put her time in. She got the officers to open up to her. It’s a good listen, with a caution, brace yourself towards the end.

Interesting and informative

After several fictional K-9 mysteries I decided to take the plunge and see what the real deal was about. Although I missed the intrigue at times I’m glad I stuck with it and found this to be a worthwhile investment. Good insight, surprising summary dialogue and a good positive for our global police force.

Having worked mainly in healthcare but also in the legal field, through my lifetime I’ve come to firmly believe from firsthand experience that regardless of profession you find good and bad, both in varying degrees, in every field. My take on the summary is that Rachel found this to be true also. With the turmoil of today it was uplifting to hear that reflected from someone who -with good reason- had a more negative perspective going in but found more good than bad and was lucky to embrace a healing which led to happiness.

Way too self absorbed to be good listen

Author is so much less about the dogs and the unit than she is about herself. Couldn’t get through it AND I love a good dog related story.

Not what I expected

I thought it was going to be about dogs, not a diary of a lesbian poet and all her fears. Don't waste your credits or money!!! The person reads it well, especially the French stuff, but the story is crap! Maybe because my previous "listens" have been about Navy SEALs, war, spies or stories about war dogs or just dogs in general, this was too foo foo, no substance, no story. At times very disconnected. I kept listening for as long as I did, hoping it would get better or as background noise while I did other things. But enough was enough! I couldn't even finish it.This must be her first book, I can't say I "appreciate" her "style"

I just couldn't get on board

My background with dogs is in the pet care industry, so I knew this would be different for me. But I just couldn't finish it. While I might not agree 100% with the raising and training procedures, I understand that this is a different world. However, I was concerned and a bit disbelieving when the k9 cops supposedly let the author "get attacked" with absolutely no training. Then they let her go along on calls when she supposedly had a fairly severe knee injury- isn't that a liability to the police department and to the person being tracked? But when the k9 cop sent a dog to track a runaway teenager, then admitted to the author that he was a bit concerned that the dog might attack the runaway, I was just blown away and completely appalled. Then they returned the runaway to an irate father without any mention of a call to social sevices (not sure of Canadian policies here). I also found the narrator annoying when she attempted to do a French accent. I actually decided I didn't really believe the story was true so I quit reading.

Hung up on her own political statements.

This book started out with good dog and owner stories, but the author is just using the book as a means to get her own political statements in, to jam them down everyone else throat. No I would not recommend this.
