Publisher's summary

From the acclaimed author of The Troop - which Stephen King raved "scared the hell out of me and I couldn't put it down.... old-school horror at its best" - comes this utterly terrifying novel where The Abyss meets The Shining.

A strange plague called the "Gets" is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget - small things at first, like where they left their keys... then the not-so-small things like how to drive, or the letters of the alphabet. Then their bodies forget how to function involuntarily - and there is no cure. But now, far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, deep in the Marianas Trench, an heretofore unknown substance hailed as "ambrosia" has been discovered - a universal healer, from initial reports. It may just be the key to a universal cure. In order to study this phenomenon, a special research lab, the Trieste, has been built eight miles under the sea's surface. But now the station is incommunicado, and it's up to a brave few to descend through the lightless fathoms in hopes of unraveling the mysteries lurking at those crushing depths - and perhaps to encounter an evil blacker than anything one could possibly imagine.

Part horror, part psychological nightmare, The Deep is a novel that fans of Stephen King and Clive Barker won't want to miss - especially if you're afraid of the dark.

Strange

The narrator was very good., but the story left me tuning out, and I struggled to finish listening.

Like a horrible accident, you just can't look away

I was hoping this would be a fresh new author for me --and I really did like his style--the only problem is he borrows so heavily from SK prior works (and other's) that I got a little disenchanted. I don't like to see author's copying other's work so closely.

However, this is definitely a tip of the seat listen which just plunges us to the farthest depths of madness and cruelty. Non-stop horror and a cringe worthy story. On the other end of the emotional stress meter is the childhood of Luke and Clayton who has a mother so twisted and nasty- it is understandable how they turned out as they did. Luke especially suffered as he was the more sensitive of the boys. Clayton, the older and scientifically minded child, learned to deal with his fears in other ways.

There are a few problems--the Get's is barely a mention in the story, yet the publisher summary puts it up front. Also I thought the ending fell a little flat after such a build up. Some of the animal cruelty and gross parts were repetitive and unnecessary--in fact, the book runs a little too long.

Overall, if you want to escape reality for awhile, this is the one to do it.

Scared Me So Much Can't Decide If I Wan't More

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Recommend to a friend? Not sure. Recommend to an enemy for sure. It would scare them to death. My first clue should have been that this was an author who's previous book scared Stephen King. Think about it. What would it take to do that? I still dove in. The narration was over the top morose initially. I almost put the book down because of it. I persevered and so should you. I listened to this book while driving to work one morning and I swear I startled many other commuters when they glimpsed my horrified look.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Deep?

**Spoiler Alert** How can you answer and not give away a spoiler I wonder? The most memorable is also the most devastating as I am a dog lover. It was during the dogs terrible demise. Rips your heart out slowly and painfully as you listen to it.

Have you listened to any of Corey Brill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Never listened to any other performance. I'm willing to give him another try if his tone is different in other books.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

See Spoiler alert above.

The Deep

I had high hopes for this book.I was expecting some sort of apocalyptic story since there was a plague mentioned. The Getz, was not hardly in the story.A man is summoned to find out what is going on with his estranged brother who is under the sea in a lab.Something has gone awry down there and we never get a full picture of what that is.There are monsters and horrible atrocities being committed.Who knows.Corey Brill is a fine narrator but the story needed some editing or a better explanation.I was given this book by the author, narrator or publisher.

Nick Cutter and Corey Brill go great together

Nick Cutter’s descriptive, rich horror prose is well served by Corey Brill’s vocal range. Brill shifts from pastoral to desperate to Creepy outright menacing in a seemless flow. 5/5 I’ve listened to it three times this year.

Terrifying, dark, heart-breaking, and just creepy

Oh damn, this audiobook was intense! Terrifying, dark, gruesome, heart-breaking, and just creepy as hell. Definitely brings a new perspective on the proverbial monsters in the closet. As soon as you think you know what will happen next, he totally pulls the rug out from under you and you go sprawling. This author has quickly become one of my absolute favorites. The narrator does an incredible job of vividly expressing the psychological fear and horror experienced by the main characters. I also greatly appreciate the fact that the author feels no obligation to tie everything up in a pretty, red ribbon….you may not always like how things turn out, but he definitely keeps it real. The Troop is still my favorite book so far by this author, but this one is a very close second.

It's dark and unsettling, I cant get away.

I think this combination of author and narrator is absolutely cohesive. Pure ear heaven or hell depending on how you look at it. The story is flows in a way that leaves you craving the next chapter.

Yuck!!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Nope. This book was a series of gross-outs. I kept hoping for some interesting character growth or fun science fiction plot. After about 4 hours listening, I read the customer reviews and got the impression this was going to be the sort of book where the dog dies. At that point I decided to stop listening.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have liked to see some growth in the characters and an more explanation for the events in the story.

Which scene was your favorite?

I didn't really enjoy any of the scenes which is why I gave up and quit listening.

Do you think The Deep needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Just let it die a quiet death.

Any additional comments?

I thought The Troop was a much better book.
