Publisher's Summary

Turning the traditional notion of parenting on its head, Dr Tsabary shifts the epicentre of the parent-child relationship away from the standard parent-to-child 'know it all' approach to a mutual 'parent-with-child' relationship in which the parent learns alongside the child.

Parents unwittingly pass on an inheritance of psychological pain and emotional rigidity to their children. To handle the behaviour that results from this, traditional books on parenting abound with quick-fix techniques for control and behaviour management. In contrast, by following Shefali Tsabary's philosophy and the advice in The Conscious Parent, you will begin to learn from your child, accept who they are and not only feel closer to them, but also more in touch with yourself.

As you develop both emotionally and spiritually, so you will feel more confident in regard to raising well-adjusted, happy children.

Excellent Concepts

The scenarios presented are relatable and real life leaving you feel understood as a parent. While the concepts of conscious parenting seem idealistic they also feel daunting. As a parent I can see the many ways in which my own makeup has been imposed on my child unknowingly and its these aspects where I struggle the most as a parent. This book has opened my eyes and I suppose that is where we all need to start.

Enjoyable and enlightening.

Really enjoyed listening to this book. The authors voice is so soothing and the tone of the book is unpatronizing and empowering. Certainly an eye opener with a few very relatable situations. Wish I had a book like this at the start of my parenting journey. It has made me think more before I react to a situation, asking myself why I feel the need to say/do/feel the way I do. I have already seen improvements in my own family life. Highly recommended book.

Love it!

This book is great as it’s supported my idea of letting my children grow up to be who their meant to be without me dumping my emotional baggage onto them.

I’m going to start listening to it again!

Eye opening and heart warming

Thank you Dr Shefali, this book really helped me deepen my experience of parenting, wish I had understood it before having a child, but hey, we just have to work from where we are and thats OK. If you have children or are hoping to someday this book is so worth reading and more than once IMO. Its also easy to listen to and Dr Shefali does a great job of narrating. Five stars!

Simply brilliant!

This really is a life changing book and I have recommended it to a number of people. No matter how old your child is it worth a listen as it encourages reflection on the way that you were parented as well as how you parent. It's insightful and inspirational!

Hard to hear but well worth it

Lovely book, well read and easy to listen to. A little 'deep' at times that often hits a sore spot in how our behaviour is directly affecting our childrens, however sometimes you have to hear the truth to understand how to help your child thrive. I personally enjoyed every minute.

Not Feeling it

I'm over half way through this book and so far there have been no suggestions on actually how to deal with a situation, only stories of happenings with other families that are usually quite negative. The author refers to 'sitting with your emotions' quite often which I fear may be the only advice given other than think before you speak. I am surprised to say that the author is also quite negative with her labelling of the parents in her stories. I'm not sure if she's merely trying to show that she empathises with us (by speaking the words that are often thought) but there appears to be a lot of placing the blame on the parents in a way that suggests we're all too wrapped up in materialism and ego and selfishness. Most parents do think about their childrens needs and often but they just don't know how to make things better in a fast paced world where society is constantly changing. I feel that this book is more of a reminder of what goes on in certain families and not really helpful in how to achieve mindful parenting, how to be more aware and how to quickly assess our children's needs. I suppose I still have half a book to get through, so that may change, but I'm struggling to hang on in their to see if that's the case! I would expect a book like this to make you feel empowered to make a big difference but so far I just feel deflated and confused as to what the book is trying to achieve.

A transforming book, amazing

Possibly the most enlightening and meaningful book that I have ever read / listened to. Read this before all other tactical parenting book.. It's not about quick fixes or band aids.. It goes to the core of who we are and why we act the way that we do - challenging us to find our own authenticity and presence both as people and parents. Beautifully narrated by the author.

Enjoyable & enlightening

If you are open to non traditional parenting theories then this is a great book. Helps you see children’s frustration and your frustrations with them in a totally new light. The first part of the book lays all the foundations and theories which come together in the latter part of the book. This was my first Audible book which was recommended to me. Lovely that the author is the narrator.

Must read for parents

A great insight into how your lack emotional awareness impacts your children's development.

Have you ever wondered why your kids behave they way they do, it's to do with you, good strategies and read life stories that give the book substance.

The audio is smooth and well read.

Rewind.

Little bit hard to listen to with the narrator's voice.
I went back to relisten.
Digest.
There were some thought provoking moments and times when I felt assured I was doing a good job as a parent.
I appreciate the opportunities that glimmer like gold, those memories that are loving and warm with my son.
Make each moment count with your child and treat them like they have everything they need already..respect.

Very Insightful

A wonderful book for parents everywhere. The main take away I got was to take a step back and look at my own self/responses/reactions/triggers/emotions in relation to my children. There was a lot of great insights, and I loved how many different examples she gave. It did feel at times as though things were maybe repeated a bit, and the book could’ve been condensed. But I suppose we need to hear things like this a few times before they permeate deep enough into our thinking. Overall a great book, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to be a better parent/person.

Therapy for all, will listen to again.

Listening to this book did as much for me as therapy, I feel more prepared to parent as it made me reflect a lot on how I was parented that formed who I am. Challenging in a good way. Will listen to again and again. I feel the listener is assumed to be middle class with normative dreams for their children, though the book does well to challenge those projections.

So needed today!

This is one of the most enlightening books I've ever read on parenting. It has completely changed the way I think about my children and every relationship, from my partner to my parents and work colleagues. I highly recommend this to anyone who is struggling or suffering through their parenting experience.

A great start to understanding parenting.

This wet my appetite for the psychology of kids. And then helped me to realise the problem was actually mine verses the kids. Left me desperate to find out more. Oh the things I learnt and then the second book by the same author poof.... Mind blown.
