Story
An elite plan is afoot, a plan so secret and dangerous that its existence is known only to a tiny group of specialists within the innermost core of the CIA. As clandestine worlds collide, the present faces the past, and disturbing moral choices are weighed against a shining patriotic dream. What is the truth? Whose truth should be believed?

Story
A landmark collaboration between a thirty-year veteran of the CIA and a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, The Main Enemy is the inside story of the CIA-KGB spy wars, told through the actions of the men who fought them. Based on hundreds of interviews with operatives from both sides, The Main Enemy puts us inside the heads of CIA officers as they dodge surveillance and walk into violent ambushes in Moscow. This is the story of the generation of spies who came of age in the shadow of the Cuban missile crisis and rose to run the CIA and KGB in the last days of the Cold War.

Story
When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

Story
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Who was Kim Philby? Those closest to him—like his fellow MI6 officer and best friend since childhood, Nicholas Elliot, and the CIA’s head of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton—knew him as a loyal confidant and an unshakeable patriot. Philby was a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union. Together with Elliott and Angleton he stood on the front lines of the Cold War, holding Communism at bay. But he was secretly betraying them both: He was working for the Russians the entire time.

Publisher's summary
Crisis constantly lurks around the corner, monitored by spies who are always with us. In his career-capping thirteenth novel, master of the espionage thriller Robert Littell has crafted a breathtaking story of the legendary CIA - "The Company" to insiders.
At its heart lies a spectacular mole hunt involving the CIA, MI6, KGB and Mossad - a stunningly conceived trip down the rabbit hole to the labyrinthine Alice-in-Wonderland world of espionage, "a wood where things have no names."
Racing across a landscape spanning the legendary Berlin Base of the 1950s - the front line of the simmering Cold War - the Soviet invasion of Hungary, the Bay of Pigs, Afghanistan, and the Gorbachev putsch, The Company tells the thrilling story of agents imprisoned in double lives, fighting an enemy that is amoral, elusive, and formidable. It also lays bare the internecine warfare within the company itself, adding another dimension to the spy vs. spy game.
Critic reviews
"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel, he should have." (Tom Clancy, author of Patriot Games) "If le Carre is the Joyce of spy novelists, Littell is the Dickens." (Booklist, starred review). "An epic tale...peopled by heroes and villains who seem almost mythological in retrospect...Keeps you riveted." (Nelson DeMille, author of Up Country)
"Destined to become the definitive novel about the CIA." (Amazon.com)

On Christmas Day, 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev delivered a ten-minute televised speech announcing his resignation as Soviet president. Moments later, with little pomp and less circumstance, the red flag was lowered from its floodlit perch atop the Kremlin, and the Soviet Union ceased to exist. Into the vacuum—before a new democracy had time to put down roots—surged the Russian mafia, supplying what the new state could not: krysha, or “roof”—protection for the privately owned businesses sprouting across the country.

Joe Barboza knew that there were two requirements for getting inducted into the Mafia. You had to be Sicilian. And you had to commit a contract killing. The New Bedford-born mobster was a proud Portuguese, not Sicilian, but his dream to be part of La Cosa Nostra proved so strong that he thought he could create a loophole. Barboza’s legacy, buried for years thanks to the murders or deaths of its participants, is finally coming to light and being told in its unvarnished brutality by one of America’s most respected true crime writers.

It is an era that redefined history. As the 1790s began, a fragile America teetered on the brink of oblivion, Russia towered as a vast imperial power, and France plunged into revolution. But in contrast to the way conventional histories tell it, none of these remarkable events occurred in isolation.

Almost brilliant with glaring mischaracterizations
On the whole, this was a great book where the author wove a realistic, sobering yet fictional story through the historical backdrop of the birth and life of the CIA. The fictional characters were well-developed and some scarcely hid their veiled portrayal of real people. It was, for the most part, an enjoyable book that held my interest throughout.
The author takes some liberties with historical characters and makes some leaps of fiction to fill gaps debated by history. There was some wide literary license taken in the mischaracterization of some historical characters to the point of being caricatures. The most egregious was perhaps that of President Ronald Reagan. The author paints the president that gets the most credit for dismantling the Soviet Union as a doddering, absent-minded simpleton who is as easily persuaded as a child being coaxed with ice cream. The was left with an image of a ventriloquist with his hand up the back of the 40th president of the United States. I almost put the book down at that point. While the rise and fall of the Soviet Union is so prominent an overarching plotline, the Reagan years were glossed over quickly as little more than a footnote in terms of its role in pulling down the iron curtain. Reagan's most controversial activities involving the CIA were not touched on either as the Reagan administration's role was relegated to its role in providing Stinger missiles to the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan to fight off the imposing Soviet mi-24 Hind and Mi-8 Hip helicopters.
I was left with the impression throughout much of the book that the CIA was so incompetent, it is a wonder we aren't all speaking Russian or Chinese today.
Some of the storylines were a bit obvious and telegraphed while others took me on twists and turns that were very enjoyable. The overt and less obvious allusions to Alice in Wonderland were woven throughout the book, perhaps more so than necessary. The book would have been just as effective a spy tome if some of the more notable historical characters were dealt with in more abstract ways. Afterall, the book focuses mostly on the fictional characters.
Scott Brick's performance was nothing short of what we have come to expect from one of the best.

One of the best audiobook i have
English is not my maiden language, so i decided to subscribe to audible.com in order to improve my capability to understand spoken English "on the fly".
Usually i prefer historical books; but for once i decided to try a novel, although historically oriented.
I'm now down to part 6, and i'll rate it 6 stars, if it was possible. I can follow it very easily, i can follow the plot down into the most intriguing details, and the historical references, as far as i can cross-check, are very accurate.
I'll recommend it to everybody. I've seen some comments related to the profanities and other harsh words, but you cannot depict such characters in a realistic manner, if you censor yourself that way. This is not Swift's "Polite Conversations", nor a Nun's bedside reading; it is a cloak-and-dagger novel, the characters are for real, and you get historical accuracy as a free throw-in!

Epic story with a couple of major weak points
Let's address the bad first. I'm used to reading massive volumes with many characters and plot threads. This audio book jumps from one story line to the next with not even so much as a pregnant pause. That's bad for listeners. I rewound many, many times just to clarify whose story-line we had moved onto.
The second bad thing relates to the first. We're supposed to spend a few decades with these characters and the author, Robert Littell, didn't do enough to socialize us to who these main characters are. As a result, you find yourself not caring about their fates as much as you would like to until towards the end.
What's good about it?
1. The research and imagination it takes to fictionalize real events and real characters over about 50 years. Bravo Mr. Littell. Talk about a job well done.
2. The narration by Scott Brick was also brilliant, certainly in my top 10.
It's a long book but I would ultimately recommend it. Be patient and take your time with it. And I suspect the issue of story-line navigation might be resolved in hard copy.

Mostly good
The first two thirds are entertaining and gripping - but then the work descends into melodrama and unrealistic characterizations. The love stories don’t convince. Strangely reminded me of WEB Griffin’s novels where all the good guys are selfless and altruistic while killing and maiming.

I found the book, very interesting, informative, due to that it was written surrounding events that were during my lifetime, and grows even to the point of being the old man.
