An award-winning beer worth killing for. Can DCI Oldroyd find the killer before last orders?

Steeped in a history of award-winning Yorkshire ale, the town of Markham boasts not one but two breweries. Richard Foster runs one; his sister, Emily, along with her partner, Janice, runs the other. And not without some resentment.

The unwelcome return of the town’s former bad boy, Brendan Scholes, threatens to ignite the sibling rivalry further. Scholes claims to have found the long-lost secret recipe to the beer that made Richard and Emily’s father famous, and he wants money.

But it isn’t long before Scholes’ body is found floating in a fermentation tank at one of the breweries, his head caved in by a hammer. DCI Oldroyd and Andy Carter are called in to investigate the murder, and there’s no shortage of suspects.

As rumours of the possible existence of a recipe for the famous beer spread against a backdrop of growing homophobia and misogyny, tempers run high. With Markham’s beer industry at stake, a killer on the loose and the town’s residents out for blood, Oldroyd needs to solve the murder before someone else is killed…

Preachy

I have enjoyed the previous books in this series. They are droll portraits of what I imagine to be quirky north country folk. Unfortunately this 10th book seemed little more than an extended and quite preachy sermon on the evils of addiction. Gambling and alcohol. Disappointing.

Great Story Line

Entertaining story. Clever story line about a murder in a brewery. I thought the character description was a little too weak. Other than that I have enjoyed this series.

A good series but listen to the narrator first

I've read all the books in this series and really enjoyed them so I thought I would get an audible to listen to. I did not like the narrator. Back to my kindle. It is a clever mystery in a good series.

Least favroite in series

Did not enjoy this story as much as the others. The bad almost came out of nowhere. It isn't that you couldn't guess it is more the author did not give you enough and maybe the surprise was supposed to be a good twist, but I found a bit annoying. Smaller minor charcaters were back and they added to the story along with the favorites. Still 5 stars because so well written.

A lecture in addiciton wrapped in a mystery

The bssic mystery is a good one, but. the subplots are too many, too many strands of social commentary irreelebant to the story. The final resolution of themystry had little to do with poklice owrkk , perhaps due to Ellis being to wrappedup with exploring the provblems of addiciton.

Another great story with a twist ending

Loved the book and the character development. It is enjoyable to have updates on character lives intertwined with a good murder plot. Did not see this ending coming which is the way I prefer. Looking forward to the new book out this spring.

Narrator losing his knack for voices

I have listened to all the books and this one -everyone sounds the same or a caricature of the region. It was tiresome. Maybe change up the narrator.
