Just ok

The story wasn't bad. The narration wasn't good. The tones & accents were pretty bad.

I enjoyed this book very much.A young man and hid ward come to England and get swept up in a murder investigation.Wendy Wolfson was a fine narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.' 

Entertaining!

This was a good story, good development of the characters, ones which I want to follow! I look forward to seeing more in this series.

Great series starter

Characters are delightful, backgrounds are interesting and unique. I’m so very ready for the second story!

Good story, poor narration.

I thought the story was interesting, and that is a good thing because the narration was so poor I would have given up on it. When the main characters are male the narrator should male.

The story was OK but not overwhelming. I Felt that the narrator did well with the female Voices but not with the male voices. They all sounded like husky bedroom voices.

Great story line and narration

Over all the story line was good and the narrator did a great job on the different voices to the characters.

Great New Series Find!

I really like it when Audible offers sales on the first book in different series because I've discovered a number of previously unknown (to me) authors. Irina Shapiro is one of those. Her Redmond and Haze series is one I'm really going to enjoy devouring. Capt. Redmond and his 10 year old ward Micah have recently been released from a Southern prison at the end of the Civil War. Redmond discovers he has inherited a huge estate in England and is the new Lord of the manor. Micah was the bugle boy of the company and was wounded along with his father and older brother, who both died in the horrible prison, even though Dr. Redmond did all he could to try to save them and others, but without basic medicine and food he wasn't able to save many. The same night Redmond and Micah arrive at the manor another stranger is discovered dead in the church cript. The discovery of "who done it" is an adventure to listen to. This book is not a "claw holes in your sofa" kind of suspense but it is a slowly unfolding suspense that also quietly reveals the characters's personalities. Can't wait to start book 2 in the series.

Excellent start of a successful series

Without a doubt an excellent audio book! Having been a audio book listener for 20 years, I seldom write reviews. With that being said, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book from the very beginning. I look forward to the listening to the next chapter of the characters friendship and their personal lives.

Amazingly good.

As a first book in a series, this was an amazingly good first book. From the very beginning it captures your attention. Both main characters proved to be interesting and well developed. An excellent storyline that kept you guessing. I very much liked that Haze and Redmond come off as being down to earth. I look forward to reading this entire series, as there is much potential for storylines set in this time period, and I very much want to know if Micah's sister Mary will be found.
