A mutilated body is found dumped at Cowane's Hospital in the heart of historic Stirling. For DCI Malcolm Ford it's like nothing he's ever seen before, the savagery of the crime making him want to catch the murderer before he strikes again. For reporter Donna Blake it's a shot at the big time, a chance to get her career back on track and prove all the doubters wrong. But for close protection specialist Connor Fraser it's merely a grisly distraction from the day job.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Publisher's Summary
A large country mansion. A locked room. A gruesome murder.
Russian oligarch Alexander Volkov has invited 1,000 guests to a party at his palatial Surrey residence, Westgrave Hall. But while giving a private tour of the library, a gunman kills Volkov, wounding his ex-wife and slaying her new beau. Nothing makes sense to DCI Craig Gillard. In the blood-spattered crime scene there are no forensic traces of anyone else involved, CCTV shows no one entered or left the library, and everyone seems to have an alibi. Is it a crime of revenge, the squaring of a love triangle, or a Russian government operation? Could the victims have simply shot each other? Gillard’s eventual discovery is shocking even to him.
A gripping crime thriller from a master of the genre, The Bodies at Westgrave Hall will leave you guessing until the very end.

Listened to it in one day
I like to read a series in order. That said, this edition can be read as a stand alone and easily followed as the storyline does not require a background of the usual cast of characters. The editors synopsis sets the scene, no need to repeat it here. The elements of the crime story move quickly, the focus is on the who is the killer, lots of red herrings, but fair. Truly entertaining!

Clever
A good solid entry in this series. Have gotten a bit tired of the “pressure from above” to solve the case as a prime motivator for the DCI and team instead of the pursuit of justice. Story is engaging and well plotted. Few stumbles though there are some. Who “done it” versus how “done it” drives this entertaining police procedural.
Narrator in this series is excellent.

Good story, bad narration
Love this series and the characters. This particular story was very interesting with good twists and turns. However, this narrator CANNOT do female voices - they sound like whiny muppets in every book! It’s impossible to then picture any female characters as competent or appealing in any way. The male characters sound great, so do better!

Annoying narration
I can’t for the life of me understand why the narrator decided on moronic voices for most of the police officers. The text shows them speaking good English in well constructed sentences but he makes them sound as though they can barely read or write. Why?
The story is a bit far-fetched, not as good as previous books in the series, but it’s made so much worse by this annoying narration. I hope the author decides on a different voice actor for future books. I won’t be listening to this one again.

not a good book
I have read and enjoyed all of the craig gillard books to date and waited eagerly for this one to arrive. I have to say that i could not wait to get to the end of it. I found it to be the most boring book i have listen to and was very disappointed with this. There is a lot of irrelevant information given especially at the start and it did not capture my interest at all throughout this. The only reason i did not return is that i am ever optimistic that the next one will be better and be back to the exciting story lines from before. Unless you are a gillard fan then i would not recommend this book
