Engrossing

The author has written a detective story with just enough difference to make it an interesting read.

Our protagonist is Nikki Galena, a hard driving female Detective Inspector. Galena is focused on avenging her daughter who is in a permanent vegetative state in a hospital after she was a victim of crime. Galena is being forced to work with Detective Sergeant Joseph Easter, whose reputation is as questionable as hers. Galena heads a team investigating the disappearance of a young girl. The story takes an unexpected turn toward the end.

The book is well written and the plot twists and turns as the suspense builds. The characters are complex and our hero is a strong tough character. I enjoy books with strong women heroes. The story takes place on the Lincolnshire Fens in England. I did not know what a Fen was until reading this book.

Henrietta Meire does a good job narrating the book. Meire is an actress, author, voice over artist and audiobook narrator.

Awful, Northern Accents

What did you like best about Crime on the Fens? What did you like least?

This is a nice easy going story which introduces the characters well. However, the awful, awful Lancashire/Mancunian accent used by the narrator grated every time I turned it on. Does she even know where the fens are?

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It is a good story with a nice plotline, just spoilt by....

How could the performance have been better?

Research......Manchester is not in Cambridgeshire, neither should its accent be.

Did Crime on the Fens inspire you to do anything?

Unfortunately, because of the narration I shall not be buying any more of this series

I'm always on the look-out for a good police yarn, and this one did not disappoint!

Henrietta Metre is a fine narrator, who plays her characters well, and when she spoke the last sentence, my first thought was,

"Well...what hapoened to all of them next??"

Fortunately, the answer was just a listen away, and that makes for a great series.

Generally Unintelligible

Unfortunately, I had to abandon this book. Even though I am able to decode accents rather quickly, I gave up on this one. Not only is her accent very "thick", she speaks so quickly that it's hard to keep up with the narrative. I even tried reducing the speed, but to no avail. Fortunately I didn't have to give up a credit for this one.

Will definitely be listening to more by her.

Very fast paced story

This was a quick listen. Great storyline. Kept me interested and wanting more throughout the book. Would recommend!

Could not tolerate. Did not make it past third chapter. Far overdone accents. Tired storyline about yet one more rogue cop who thrives on breaking all rules.

Good crime series start

I enjoyed listening to this as is was well narrated and a good plot. The characters were very likable and relatable. Looking forward to the second in the series.
