Publisher's summary

From the moment she was banished by her father, the king, Princess Maia journeyed to seek sanctuary at Muirwood Abbey, the epicenter of magic and good in the land. Now safe for the first time since her cruel abandonment, Maia must foster uneasy friendships with other girls training to be Ciphers: women who learn to read and engrave tomes of ancient power, despite the laws forbidding them to do so.

As Maia tries to judge whom to trust, she makes a shocking discovery: her destiny is to open the Apse Veil and release trapped spirits from her world. Then she learns that her father is coming to Muirwood Abbey to celebrate the Whitsunday festival - and Maia's estranged husband, whom she was forced to abandon, will join him. Torn between deadly political machinations and unstoppable spiritual forces, Maia must channel unknown powers within herself to save her friends, the abbey, and the entire kingdom of Muirwood.

I would love to visit Muirwood...and have an apple from the grove. I can imagine myself dancing around the may pole. the descriptions have me right there with the characters!

Wonderful series to enter into

I absolutely loved this second part to the story. You see the relationship between Maya and Collier grow and there are three generations of strong women banding together to overcome their predicament. I think it says quit a bit about the author that he portrays women as strong and independent and just as capable as a man to "save the world". Maya shows such compassion and it makes you strive to be more like her in real life.

enjoyable

This book kept my interest and left me wanting to know what happens next. I would like to have seen more character description of the king but at the end I discovered this was not the first book in a series so maybe that happened elsewhere.

Not my favorite, but still good

of all of Jeff Wheeler's books that I've listened to so far, and of all the Muirwood Books, this one is probably at the bottom of my list of favorites. It fell flat to me without enough conflict or action. I particularly felt that the relationship between Mya and Collier (sorry if I spelled their names wrong, but this is an AUDIO book so I didn't see the names written) was very boring. Nothing HAPPENS! It was very frustrating. Yes, they finally proclaim their love eventually, but they can't kiss so it's kinda.....meh. I love a good love story and this one was a good attempt, but I wouldn't rate it higher than that. I have yet to listen to the third book in the series so perhaps it will get better. I enjoyed the love story between Lia and Colvin much more in the previous Muirwood series. Still, it's a decent listen, especially if you enjoyed Jeff Wheeler's other books.

A very good fantasy book.

This book is a very good second book in a trilogy setup as this. It did not give away the future. It only carried you to an inevitable conclusion for yourself. Though it was a little slow in. beginning, in the end it makes you hunger for the third book!

Awesome

Listening to the series is such a delightful nail biter because it's so good and frustrating. I could hardly wait for the final chapter so I can figure out what the h*ll is going to happen next... It's better than any soap opera!! The author's writing is so awesome and descriptive and along with the narration of Kate in my mind's eye I'm sitting in a movie theater watching everything unfold...thumbs up...I love the cameo of Leah and Colvin!!

Many Surprises

I would like to praise the author and the narrator of this series, AAA ++ to both of you! This book really helped me to see things in a different light than the first book. I began to see Mia more than just this victim of a horrible situation, but one with a purpose beyond comprehension. I grew to understand and to love some of the characters as I watched them become more of the people that were necessary to promote the changes needed to fulfill the prophecy. I was touched and surprised by the extent of the Princess's compassion. I disagreed with her decision tdesire to do the "right" thing by granting her Father a second chance was a childish decision to hold onto a long lost time in her life that she had hoped would return. Many more would be lost because of her inability to stop him from hurting others. It was a foolish move that will undoubtedly help the third books plot.
This is my third series by this author and I am totally enjoying it as I have been marathoning them! Off to the last one.
