Publisher's summary

From The Wall Street Journal best-selling author Jeff Wheeler.

Before she befriended a frightened young boy in the palace of Kingfountain, Ankarette Tryneowy grew up during the shattering civil war that raged between members of the Argentine family. This is the story of how the only daughter of a lawyer and a midwife became the famed Queen's Poisoner.

Recruited by King Eredur's ambitious uncle, Ankarette is thrown into a world of double dealing, deception, and tangled loyalties. With the help of her mentor and friend, Sir Thomas, she must learn to trust her instincts and remember that others will not always be loyal, even when they are of the same blood. But involving herself in the machinations of the realm draws the eye of an enemy more dangerous than kings or dukes. How will she navigate the politics of the realm and the desires of her heart to become the woman she needs to become?

More please!

I can't get enough of Jeff Wheeler's wholesome fantasy. His characters are rich, kingdoms come alive and best of all the stories keep me grounded in the principals I hold dear.

Great Prequel!

I loved visiting the world of Kingfountain and getting to see the characters that are referenced in the series. Ankarette Treneowy is a force to be reckoned with and I can see why she was feared in The Queen's Poisoner. I'd recommend this book to be read either before or after completing the Kingfountain series.

Kate Rudd is never a disappointment

A joy to listen to. I had started reading The king fountain series and once I had listened to her I have had to hear them all.

Awaiting more!

A beautifully crafted character!

The beauty of this story is twofold. First, the protagonist is more fleshed out here than in her first appearances in the original Kingfountain series, yet her influential role is felt throughout her appearances. She has never felt stagnant or marginalized.

Secondly, Ankerette’s story is far more fascinating now that you see all of the interlocking facets of the world and her ties to it. If you’ve read the first 3 books of the series, you know the story on a peripheral level, but this fills in the gaps from the perspective of the actual character who was involved with it. This is the best way that I’ve seen such a thing done in quite some time. This is similar to the Terry Goodkind story The First Confessor, where the protagonist filled in many blanks to a particular part of the story arcs that were established in the main line series. However, I think this was done a good bit better and felt more planned out. As if the story was always written before it was released.

This is a story that is one off, but a very well done one off. The performance of Kate Rudd is awesome, as always! She gives me that feeling of impeccable competence that I feel with Derek Perkins and Tim Gerard Reynolds. Where I never feel that they could allow themselves to read a bad book! I appreciate a great work ethic, and Kate Rudd is in a quite illustrious group!

In closing, it’s well worth a listen/read, so get to it!

Not my cup of tea.

First off, Kate Rudd is not a favorite narrator of mine. I don't care for the way she over-enunciates every single word. It comes off as being very stilted, in my opinion. Secondly there was too much political intrigue to my liking. I found my mind wandering over and over. I did finish it because I've enjoyed other books by Jeff Wheeler. It got great reviews so I wonder if reading the Kingfountain series first would have been better. I'll never know.

Wheeler & Rudd triumph again

Just finished this book in 2 days and am a wreck - again. This fantasy world and it's stories remind me so much of the amazing Muirwood novels and Rudd's talented vocal and performance skills take this book from good to amazing. I love the very human, very identifiable charactars and before long knew them so well I knew how they would react. As well as the situations they were in but served in rich descriptive tones performed in a way to make them new.

Excellent book

The whole series is very good, the story is fascinating and the characters are well developed, insidious intrigue, heartbreaking drama and a lot of "human heart in conflict with itself." Very well written, and well presented. Bravo.

A Lovely Find

This prequel is a story about a young girl, Ankarette Tryneowy, whose life changes when she is taken from her home at a young age by Lord Warrewik to become maid to his daughter, Isobel, and to train to become the King's poisoner.

This is a great start to what promises to be a brilliant series.

LISTEN TO THIS BEFORE LISTENING TO BOOK 1

I previously started listening to the first book in this series though I am not too far into it, I really wish I had listened to this book, A Poisoners Enemy beforehand as it really gives you great insight into one of the main characters featuring in book 1 and also gives you the whole context of the realm for which it’s set.

I highly recommended listening to this book first and as with the other titles in this series, the narrator does a fantastic job at bringing the story to life.
