Publisher's Summary

National Book Award Winner and New York Times Bestseller!

Perfect for fans of NBC's "This Is Us," Robin Benway’s beautiful interweaving story of three very different teenagers connected by blood explores the meaning of family in all its forms—how to find it, how to keep it, and how to love it.

Being the middle child has its ups and downs.

But for Grace, an only child who was adopted at birth, discovering that she is a middle child is a different ride altogether. After putting her own baby up for adoption, she goes looking for her biological family, including—

Maya, her loudmouthed younger bio sister, who has a lot to say about their newfound family ties. Having grown up the snarky brunette in a house full of chipper redheads, she’s quick to search for traces of herself among these not-quite-strangers. And when her adopted family’s long-buried problems begin to explode to the surface, Maya can’t help but wonder where exactly it is that she belongs.

And Joaquin, their stoic older bio brother, who has no interest in bonding over their shared biological mother. After seventeen years in the foster care system, he’s learned that there are no heroes, and secrets and fears are best kept close to the vest, where they can’t hurt anyone but him.

Don't miss this moving novel that addresses such important topics as adoption, teen pregnancy, and foster care.

Touching

As an adoptive parent I feel this story was realistic and empathetic to all involved. Well done.

An amazing story about family ...

when I think about family I often think of my Mom and Dad and brothers and sisters and their aunts and uncles and all the people that I have known growing up. I was lucky to know all of my family and my extended family as a child. my memories, now as an adult embrace all these views in the people that I remember near and far.

The story looks at family and all its various forms known and unknown. it's a story of discovery and new beginnings and letting go and opening up.

Far From The Tree

When you are a part of the family of adoption, how do you heal that missing part? Sure you love your family. Grace loves the baby she placed with a great family. Joachim has lived his whole life in foster care and Mia who does not look like anyone in her family. A page turning YA book that is honest and open. Important read.

This was a beautiful book about the realities of life, family, and love. It doesn’t matter where you have come from or the path you are taking, this book will speak to you in one way or another. Beautifully written.

All the feels!

Made me cry several times. Really good insight as to how it would feel to be adopted and/or give such a precious gift to someone else. Loved it !

Liked

Brought some very personal memories up for me. I'm glad there is open adoption now. I wasn't so lucky.

Very personal...

This one hit home for me. I'm adopted and, over the past 3 years, have located my birth mother, father, and 6 siblings.
This is a must read for anyone involved in adoption.
