International phenomenon Angie Thomas revisits Garden Heights seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give in this searing and poignant exploration of Black boyhood and manhood. A Printz Honor Book!

If there’s one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it’s that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad’s in prison.

Life’s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav’s got everything under control.

Until, that is, Maverick finds out he’s a father.

Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But it’s not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when he’s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove he’s different.

When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can't just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. He’ll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.

We defined a series as having a minimum of three books, and—after some debate—we decided the titles had to be anchored in fiction. From YA to horror to historical fiction, from fresh voices to seminal tales, hours of discovery await.

Editor's Pick

Worth the wait
I have been waiting for Concrete Rose ever since Angie Thomas told me in a post-interview chat back in 2019 that she was working on Maverick’s story. And—no surprises here—it has been worth the wait. This is Thomas’s first novel from a male POV, but the authenticity in her storytelling remains unmatched. And Dion Graham’s performance is transportive—he effortlessly switches back and forth between '90s slang in dialogue (set in 1998, this is actually considered historical fiction) and the emotional inner monologue of a 17-year-old who’s just learned he’s a father. Thomas’s love for this character shines through as each chapter unfolds, and fans of The Hate U Give will appreciate learning more about Maverick’s origins as well as the origins of other people in Starr’s world—including Lisa, King, and even her Uncle Carlos. —Katie O., Audible Editor

Loved a deep dive into a world I know nothing about as a Caucasian woman. It ended too fast for me and felt like there were so many things left unexplored.

I wanted more

This was a wonderful read and just as good as The Hate U Give and On The Come Up. I love the intersections with the other stories. I am now left wanting more because I want to hear about how Maverick ends up taking a charge for King. Can that be next please?!

Love Maverick

I absolutely love The Hate U Give so this preview into Maverick's life was refreshing. How Starr and Seven were so close in age and Mav's relationship with Mr Wyatt. I loved all the foreshadowing with Brenda, Ms Rosalie, Khalil and even DeVante.

Solid storyline with interesting characters

I’m so glad I got this prequel to The Hate U Give. I loved hearing the story of Maverick. The audible performance was great.

Great Prequel

An amazing story about the life of Starr Carter's parents.

Mav is an inspiration

Although I'm left to wonder what happened to Seven when he grew up & what about King?

I'm invested in these characters now and can't wait to find out their stories.

The author created a true to life no holds barred look into what is happening now & we need to appreciate this raw unflinching look into this world

Mav's hopes and dreams endeared him to me from jump. They made his character real to me not his mistakes and his choices.
But they only helped him grow.

Great Story

“On the Come Up“ wasn’t a bad follow up to Angie’s first book, “The Hate U Give,“ but this should’ve been her second effort instead of that one. A great story full of great character development, and it’s fantastic to see how Maverick became the man we know in “the Hate U Give“.

It trips me out how white people (some, not all) would consider stories like this as glorifying/celebrating gang life; if anything, it does the exact opposite. It’s raw, it’s real, it’s honest (brutally when warranted,) and Dion Graham really brings the characters to life through his narration, especially Maverick!

Highly recommended for everyone on the outside looking in.

It’s another one that should be in high school classrooms across the country, and should also be made into a movie; I just hope they don’t water it down like they did with “The Hate U Give“.

Should’ve been her second book!

I have to say once again say how thoroughly I enjoyed Angie Thomas and her prose. She is a spellbinding story teller who I believe anyone can enjoy. I was routing for Maverick and Lisa the entire time.

Gritty and realistic.

So, the only thing I struggled with was the narrator's voices for the women. I think I have been spoiled with multiple narrator's for a lot of the books I have been listening to lately. HOWEVER, I am so glad I stuck with it. I chose to continue when that initially turned me off and I am so happy I did. Now I want to relisten and rewatch the hate you give. It was so good listening to Big Mav's back story. It made my heart hurt at parts listening to the story and how realistic it was. I recommend this to anyone who enjoyed T.H.U.G. Very good story line.

I'm glad I stuck through it!
