I listen to a bit of everything. Mostly Fantasy and paranormal romance with my wife. Along with mysteries/thrillers, even some sci-fi.

    "A Gritty middle chapter"
If you could sum up Days of Blood & Starlight in three words, what would they be?

    Forgiveness
    Hope
    Revenge

Without giving anything away because the story is designed to go in blind and it's a LOT better that way, but Karou seeks forgivness, has and is Hope, and there is revenge exacted.

What did you like best about this story?

Zuzanna and Mick are fantastic characters and are used in the right amount during the story.

I think my favorite parts of this book were how the characters evolved and developed. From Karou and Akiva to the supporting cast, there was a lot of character building and it made everyone feel whole.

What about Khristine Hvam’s performance did you like?

She does an outstanding job giving each character a voice and using that voice to convey emotion. She uses her narration skills to bring the listener into the story and it helps us feel more like an observer than someone being read to.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, there's a few parts that are slower paced and while it's not a struggle to listen to, it does provide good stopping points. I find that to be a good thing, it lets us the listener catch a breath and prepare for what's next.

    Any additional comments?

I'm really waiting to see the conclusion to this story and hope it lives up to some high expectations.

    Story
    "Super Sequel"
Would you listen to Days of Blood & Starlight again? Why?

YES!!! I spent every spare minute I had listening to it and I am jonesing to listen to it again to catch details I missed in the first listen. I loved the story and fantasy of the story. It was really one of those books that took me to a different world. I felt like I was right there with Karou through the whole book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Days of Blood & Starlight?

It's hard to choose just one. I think that some of the best were the parallel desires of Karou and Akiva, even though they were rarely together. I don't want to give anything away for people whom haven't got to listen/read yet.

What about Khristine Hvam’s performance did you like?

She does a wonderful job with each individual character. She has such a presence through the whole story. Wonderful work!!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes I did. I went through many emotions throughout the whole book and I attribute that not only to the great writing of Taylor but also the narration of Hvam. I was able to feel each characters own feelings throughout.

    Any additional comments?

It is a great read/listen and I recommended it to several of my students. They also loved it. It was a great sequel that strays from the typical sequel blues. It was full of surprises, twists and turns. I had to force myself to stop listening when I had things that I had to do but it was turned right back on as soon as I could. Many late nights were spent listening because I could not stop.

    "Different, but Still Lovely"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Although it is a complete 180 from the first book in the series, I still feel in love with the story, the prose, and the characters.

What other book might you compare Days of Blood & Starlight to and why?

Daughter of Smoke and Bone, because it is its predecessor.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I really can't answer this. There were so many scenes that I loved that were painted beautifully by Laini Taylor

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I did. I could not stop listening to it--I brought my phone with me everywhere until I was finished. I laughed and cried. And, after I finished listening to it, I couldn't stop smiling dumbly at nothing for a few minutes.

    Any additional comments?

Like others, I was worried this would turn into another fantasy love book completely centered and concentrated on Karou and Akiva's relationship. But, I loved the world and Taylor's writing, so I picked this one up to listen. Although I expect there are many who would be disappointed, their relationship isn't the forefront of this book--the war between seraphs and chimaera is. And, I loved that. This book is much darker and has much more violent themes in the book. The first book was whimsical, light, and fun, with a hint of the dark side of things under the surface. In the second book, that dark side comes through at full throttle. We see more character development of our old, loved characters without them losing themselves completely from the first book, and we meet new characters. I loved it, and I would recommend it to anyone. I can't wait for the third!

    "New Fantasy continued!!!"

The second book to the series is NOT a disappointment. The story continues with Karou, and her friends.

Laini Taylor continues with her excellent writing style. She is able to create a story that not only allows us to listen to it's easy flow, but experience the many emotions of Karou's and her friends. The fear, loss, desire, joy, to mention only a few of the emotions.

Again, I recommend this series to all fantasy listener.

    "Laini Taylor's Story is Compelling"

I didn't like it quite as much as the first book, but that's only to be expected with the second book in a series. Lots of awful stuff happens. The villains are established as even more evil than before. The lovers are separated by oceans of complications and emotional debris that has to be worked though before they can find common ground where forgiveness might be possible. Through it all, there is hope. I can't wait for the next book. Laini Taylor an incredible writer and this story is compelling!

    "Meh"

I... don't know what happened between the first book and this one, but daaaayum. I get that the second book of a trilogy is often the hardest to write, I just feel like this one fell far short of the mark.
Akiva- dude, you have got to stop spelling everything out! We KNOOOOWWW. This guy's dialogue sounds like someone brought a Ken doll to life and gave it vocal cords. Dull, very dull. I really didn't like him in this book. Where was his sweetness? Where was his undying love? One chapter he's still in the throes of his love for Madrigal/Karou and the next chapter he's, like, settling into his fate of being forever alone. Ugh.
Karou- WHAT THE HECK. Where is my badass ninja warrior lady? Who is this wrecked shell? Why is she acting LIKE A DOORMAT? I absolutely hated her internal dialogue.
Ziri- I love this new character, though I feel he did definitely tread a... familiar... path for secondary male characters. I definitely didn't see that twist coming at the end though!
Thiago- what a piece of absolute trash. I have NO earthly idea why Karou entertained his presence for even a moment, OR why she took so long to give him his due.
The other thing I had a huge problem with was the extremely graphic rape scene. There should be some sort of warning so that women who have been sexually assaulted (1 in 6, guys. 1 in 6 women.) can AVOID that chapter. It was so very graphic.
I loved Zuzana and Mick, as well as Hazael and Laraz. I really liked the new plot points, just look past the clunky dialogue and keep on trucking!

    Story
"Pt2 of this beautiful, haunting, amazing trilogy"
If you could sum up Days of Blood & Starlight in three words, what would they be?

    Destiny. Love. Pain.

What other book might you compare Days of Blood & Starlight to and why?

Seriously. There's no comparison. But, alas, this is similar to Romeo & Juliet (amped up quite a bit) and, perhaps, Hunger Games (for rebellion under impossible conditions).
But you'd have to add angels, demons, interconnected worlds, beautiful writing, and humor in unexpected places. Also, the surprises. So many.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When the thurible with the "Karou" note is attached is opened.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book makes me laugh and cry in several places. It's bleak without being hopeless. A love story with no simple answers or clear paths forward. It's about friendship and kinship and fighting against the odds.

    Any additional comments?

This is book 2 of one of my most favorite trilogies ever. It definitely does not suffer from book 2 doldrums. Love this series so much.
