Publisher's Summary

A brutal murder, a suspect in jail, and an execution planned - but what if the wrong person is about to be killed?

When a fellow US Marshal asks Anita Blake to fly to a tiny community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on an emergency consult, she knows time is running short. When she arrives, there is plenty of proof that a young wereleopard killed his uncle in the most gruesome and bloody way possible. As the mounting evidence points to him, a warrant of execution is already under way.

But something seems off about the murder, and Anita has been asked for her expert opinion on the crime scene. Despite escalating pressure from local cops and the family’s cries for justice for their dead patriarch, Anita quickly realizes that the evidence doesn’t quite add up.

Time is against Anita, as the tight-knit community is up in arms and its fear of supernaturals is growing. She races to uncover the truth and determine whether the Marshals have caught the killer or are about to execute an innocent man - all in the name of justice.

Old School Anita

loved it! this one brought back the crime solving aspect to the story rather than too much erotic metaphysical drama.

Another disappointing addition to the series

While LKH has finally returned to the Mystery/Thriller genre with her Anita Blake series, as opposed to Erotica/Orgy-fest (of the last 17 books in the series), the book was very disappointing. She continues to use the series to work out her real-life issues. The constant preaching of therapy and discovering her bi-sexuality get old quickly. The first 10 books in the series still deserve great praise, but once she started focusing on the sexuality of each character, and ignoring plot and character-building, the series has done nothing but disappoint. While I like the individual characters, I'm tired of the constant input of her personal life into what should be a wonderful series.

No more LKH for me

This book was horrible!!! What was supposed to be the plot for the book took a back seat for Anita to go on and on about the same stuff she always talks about. Endless hours of therapy talk and about dating for someone she's not interested in dating. The only bright side was not having to hear Nathaniel's whining. I am so done with LKH!!!

good storyline

my negative is Anita needs to grow up , i have read all the books in the series and while there is growth overall. there are certain aspects where she has shown no growth. there where parts of the story I screamed out load at her stupidity because I knew from other books she should already know the answers to those question.

Great performance mediocre material

14 hours of review and feelings and 4 hours trying to modernize 30 year old material. No real action, no real magic, no (good) character development.

I don't think we will ever get our old Anita Blake back.

The only reason this gets two stars is because of the narrator did well with poor material.

Please get an Editor!!

I have been a longtime fan of the series. the last 4 book have been disappointments. This book is no different.
The 'Who Done It" mystery had so much potential lost. From the tropes of the 'Black Femme Fatale' to the repetitive lines of information mentioned once every chapter, to the unsatisfying and incomplete character development arcs. There were many (get it were) opportunities to revitalize the series that never happened and have not been realized.
I enjoyed the tension that happened between Anita and Olaf. It helped me power through the conflated story.
This story was drawn out and could have been done at least 10 chapters prior. Many shots fired and none hit the mark.

Laurell K Hamilton

You have finally gone back and found your groove. This is the BEST BOOK from the last 5 books in this series. This was going to be my last purchase for this series. BUT now that you are back, I await with bated breath for the rest of this. 1 Edward may become like Anita, woohoo excited! 2 Olaf is back and more dangerous because he is yummy to Anita's lioness. 3 The conclusion of the conversation about her and Olaf having safe sex (where he doesn't kill her) needs to be finished. I was so worried that this book would not be a good one. Thank the Lord I hung in there. Please stick with whatever method that you have found to keep the books coming and the series open. Woohoo, I forgot about Anita just holding a baby, and not panicking was so good to hear. What will she do if she leaves the Marshall services?

Not the usual

Kind of boring. These books usually have lots of activity. I was expecting alot more action and it never happened.
