Publisher's summary

After narrowly escaping the Reawakening, Angel successfully delivered Vanessa to Molten Ridges with the help of Captain Silver.

He’d love to do nothing more than spend a year relaxing and studying Old World Magic, but he knows there can be no peace until the Reawakening are dealt with.

The Buried Gods walk the Barren once more, and the Reawakening’s plot runs far deeper than he ever could have imagined. A plan hundreds of years in the making is only months from coming to fruition with only Angel standing in its way, but how can he deal with the Reawakening if he can’t even trust his own allies?

Book two in a Magitech LitRPG series by Actus, the author of Cleaver's Edge. Set in a steampunk fantasy world, it's perfect for fans of Arcane, Final Fantasy, and lovers of all things GameLit, LitRPG, and progression fantasy.

Could have used another once over

I know the author has already published the 3rd in this series and is likely long past this book. But it could have used another pass by an editor. I swear characters teleport around scenes, some know information that they should by no right know, the author forgets things he has already said, and at least 7 seperate occasions repeated a unique line twice. "Angel couldn't even clentch his teeth in defiance" being the one that stuck out the most.

But other than that i liked the story. Since it is no longer about the journey from one city to another, the story is free to bounce around the world and show us new things. I like how they have developed angel's backstory and the reawakening makes more sense now.

I like the Narrator but the way he pronounces "Soul" sounds a lot like "Saul" which confused me when there was a guy named soul.

Better than book one

Been reading everything from Actus for a couple years, and it’s clear his writing improves with work

The burden of friends

Angel and his companions barely escape with their lives but know it was by luck and in doing so was only a reprieve, one that they have seemingly no hope of countering. Angel meets and befriends other students introduced by Vanessa and decides to help them in their training of runes. There are intermediate battles with bandits but the boss fight is left for the end and it's pretty nail-biting.

It's good but felt like it was missing something

In the first book we got to know Angel and we followed his adventure through the barrens while foiling his pursuers with wit and magitech engineering. in contrast this book felt like it was literally just go from point A to point B, do thing, learn important fact then repeat. and when Angel finally took a break it literally turns into him studying his acquired artifacts and relics from book 1 from dusk till dawn. The pacing also felt fast in contrast to the day by day we had in the first book this book was basically "it took several days till the city could be seen on the horizon". I still enjoyed this book I just hope this review lets people know it won't be exactly like the first book
