It only takes a second for life to go to heck-in-a-hand-basket!
In less than 24 hours, Pepper Dunn loses her job, her boyfriend, and her home. It's the worst day of her life. But when Pepper discovers she’s a witch and has inherited the most important store in the magical town of Magnolia Cove, Alabama, she’s as happy as a pig in mud.
Too bad the shop is a familiar pet store, and Pepper doesn’t like animals - not even a teensy bit. Determined to sell the shop and get the heck out of town, Pepper’s plans go haywire when a local store owner winds up dead and Pepper gets accused of murder.
Thrust into a magical mystery, Pepper teams up with a mysterious private detective and a cat so traumatized by the murder that she’s not talking - and that cat could hold the key to Pepper’s innocence.
Now Pepper must avoid trouble, solve the mystery, and placate her new grandmother, who keeps a strict curfew that’s enforced by the talking end of her shotgun.
Sounds like a simple day in the life - as if. Can Pepper solve the mystery, or will she become the next victim of the Magnolia Cove murderer? And most importantly, will Pepper learn to love the animals she’s in charge of?

My real issue with this audio book is the narrator. this is a wonderful narrator who has a lot of range and does a good job with voice change but the main character of this book is supposed to be 25 years old and from the first word you know that this is an older woman performing. it makes it really difficult to listen to and remember how young the person is supposed to be. It just doesn't work. wonderful narrator just not appropriate for a 25 year old character as the main character
Not the right narrator

There were elements I appreciated. The mystery itself was satisfying, and the narrator’s performance added charm, especially her accent. I remember feeling content with the resolution, which speaks well of the plot’s structure.
That said, I found myself disappointed overall. The aspects that initially drew me in disappeared early on, and I struggled with tonal shifts that didn’t quite align with the setup. Character decisions occasionally felt driven by plot needs rather than internal logic, which pulled me out of the story. One scene in particular leaned into cheap innuendo, and while I might’ve tolerated it from another character, it felt especially jarring here.
More notably, the protagonist, who started off relatively grounded, made choices that felt inexplicably out of character. I understand the need for tension, yet much of it felt forced. And, on the other hand, some roadblocks felt forgotten rather than resolved, leaving me puzzled.
To be fair, these are personal gripes. I tend to prefer stories that balance wit and emotional depth. Titles like Howl’s Moving Castle, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Jane Eyre, and Just Stab Me Now are more my speed. (Yes, Jane Eyre is far from light-hearted, and there was one very questionable decision, but the payoff felt intentional and made it all feel worth it.)
Still, I finished the book, and that’s enough for me.
PS: Audible keeps recommending more titles in this sub-genre, which isn’t quite what I’m looking for. Hopefully this review helps recalibrate things, otherwise I wouldn’t have said anything.
