Story
Sandy Kinsolving's once-glittering life hangs by a thread; his future depends on his wife's inheritance and whether or not she's about to throw him out on his ear. What he wouldn't give for a solution to his money and marriage problems. If this were an Alfred Hitchcock movie, the solution would be obvious. Enter a stranger with wife problems of his own, who offers a violent - and mutually advantageous - proposal. Then, in the time it takes to whisper a word, Kinsolving's normal life ends.

A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. But after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild and lead the cold case unit at the Robbery-Homicide Division. For years, Harry Bosch has been working a case that haunts him—the murder of an entire family by a psychopath who still walks free. Ballard makes Bosch an offer: volunteer in her unit, and he can pursue his “white whale”.

Story
An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

Publisher's Summary
Stone Barrington must track down an enemy intent on disturbing law and order in the latest action-packed thriller from the number-one New York Times best-selling author.
Upon returning from a dangerous coastal adventure, Stone Barrington is looking forward to some normalcy with the leading lady in his life. But when a grisly crime arrives on his doorstep, along with some suspicious new clients eager for his help, Stone realizes peace and quiet are no longer an option. As it turns out, the mastermind behind the malfeasance rocking New York City and the nation's capital wields a heavy hand of influence. And when Stone is unable to recruit those closest to the case to his side, he is left with few leads and a handful of dead-ends.
But with the help of important people in high places - and the expertise of alluring new friends - Stone is more than ready to rise to the occasion.
Critic Reviews
“Woods’s alternate universe—in which the first female U.S. president is succeeded by the second female U.S. president—provides perfect escapist fare.”—Publishers Weekly
“Woods provides a lively romp of a book, but it's built for entertainment, not solving puzzles. Pick up a copy to update your sense of why James Bond was and is adored.”—New York Journal of Books

Changing and way too politically biased!
I’ve read or listened to each and every Stone Barrington novel. This includes all the spin offs and sadly, this may be the last.
While I’ve spent years enjoying and recommending all the Stuart Woods books, they have finally gone way too far. The previous one is the first I actually didn’t finish due to the continuous bashing of Conservatives as “Crazy conspiracy theorists” and FoxNews as worse, is finally too much. People read books such as these for the characters and their stories, not to be lectured about how bad one is for having conservative family values etc. After many years, it’s almost as though you know the characters and that is a wonderful thing that makes the books that much more interesting.
People read light books such as these to remove themselves, if only for a couple of hours from the petty infighting that is constant in the main stream media and now that’s being taken away too.
As a pilot, it’s great to hear about Stone’s plane and flying and that will be missed for sure. It’s just such a drag when you are about to enjoy a new book and it’s constantly bashing all that you believe in with snarky comments. Funny thing is that Stone is unabashedly capitalistic in his businesses, certainly seems to love his Country and is a very loyal friend, yet at every chance the author takes swipes at groups that traditionally hold all the same values.
I’ll not be recommending, buying nor reading any more books by a previously favorite and fantastic author, Stuart Woods.
Mr. Woods too is a pilot, flying a Citation we believe, and maybe he should spend a moment in the FlightLevels remembering what attracted so many to his fine work, rather than bashing at least 50% of his base.

political slander
The storyline was disjointed. Political comments made in the book, which had no correlation to the storyline, were inserted disrupting any normal story flow. Stuart Woods has turned his liberal political beliefs into all of his characters.

Disappointing
As a long time fan of Stuart Woods’ Stone Barrington stories, I waited for his latest with eager anticipation. Unfortunately, the story line just plodded along, interspersed with short biographies of each of Woods’ main characters. While understanding that anyone new to Stone Barrington might need to get up to speed on the regular players, these summaries that Woods keeps including in his books are putting us aficionados to sleep.
Thankfully, Tony Roberts continues to be as entertaining as ever in his narration, capturing each character perfectly with his wide repertoire of voices.

Shaken and Stirred,... Women and Women
I love how Stone continues to balance one relationship with another while mixing in a good detective story. He is my Hero as he continues to successfully ride off into the sunset managing to solve another set of situations and getting all of the women (very understanding women). Given the political climate in this country I appreciate the lack thereof commentary about what Holley has to deal with. Maybe one female President,,.. but two in a row,...Hmmm...
Keep them coming Mr. Woods!
Occasionally Tony had issue with the female voices or sounded tired or sick. If so get well Tony I enjoy how you portray the Stone Books and thanks for getting me this far in the series. (I have heard them all!)
