Top 3 out of his 23 Davenport Novels

All the Davenport Novels are worth a read, this particular book is great because it revolves around a younger, crazier, slutty, always manipulative Lucas, a group of fugitives that are both interesting & dangerous, & many of Davenports close friends in the future are cementing they're loyalties from these earlier novels. For some reason I read so many of the other Prey novels before I came back & read this one which is technically the 2nd in the series... It was worth it almost to the point I wish I read it earlier. But all his books are great & the development of Lucas & his family all take place throughout the series but this book is still in the stages before he had to worry about another woman, kids, politics, & future responsibilities I ended up reading at almost the same time because I was reading Silken Prey shorty after....

Highly recommend this book... LUCAS is establishing why he is such a bada$* & has the reputation he does....

Sandford and Ferrone - Match Made in Heaven

Is it possible to fall in love with an author/narrator/protagonist combo? Yes, indeed. Sandford, Ferrone and that sometimes naughty Davenport rock the story.

John Sandford used incredibly good judgment choosing Richard Ferrone. Long live authors who "listen" to their own books being read!

Lucas Davenport = Great

If you could sum up Shadow Prey in three words, what would they be?

Davenport, suspenseful, exciting

Who was your favorite character and why?

While I guess Davenport but another character, it would be Lily. I enjoy the whole cast of characters in the Prey novels though.

Any additional comments?

I have read most of the Prey series and love it. Am going back and listening to them in order. This is his second book. The narration is excellent. Does not disappoint. I highly recommend this series.

Lucass Davenport the ruderless rogue!

I'm not a huge fan of the early novel in the "Prey" series. Once Davenport meets and marries Weather, they have Sam, and Lettie enters the picture the novels get much better. I suspect my issues with the first 13 novels in the series, and especially with the first 6, is that Davenport seems rudderless and without a strong moral center of gravity. Davenport in Shadow Prey definitely fits that description. I like Lucas Davenport the family man more than Lucas Davenport the rogue, This book was released in 1990 and the series remains active with Book 25 being recently released.

Not impressed.

Any additional comments?

Although not exclusively, I do read a lot of crime novels and I am perplexed by the good ratings this one received. There are a lot of good crime fiction authors out there but this is not one. I do make allowances for a novel considering the fact that it is entertainment and does not need to be completely realistic. But this Novel was just bad. The characters are improbable and inconsistent. The dialog is unrealistic and cheesy. The actions of the characters are erratic. The overall idea of the story is good; the rest is just not good. I can imagine that if you are a male seeking a fantasy fulfilling story of a rich tough guy that can have his cake and eat it too and do not care much about the literature value, this is a story for you.

Richard Ferrone is Perfect!

Lucas Davenport and his friends continue to develop well. We see glimpses of the future relationships in this early novel. What I liked best was how perfectly Ferrone and Sandford sync. It is as though Sandford wrote his books with Ferrone in mind. He builds the suspense perfectly and allows the darkness of the mystery to settle upon the listener.

Narrator, not actor.

Would've preferred the narrator acted a bit more instead of just reading it. I think I would've been more engaged in the story had the narrator actually put some life into the characters other than that it's a solid thriller.

mildly entertaining but hokey

I have loved John Sandford but this one was pretty lame. Predictable romance that was very melodramatic and a convoluted story that I really didn't find compelling.

Oldie but Goodie

If you could sum up Shadow Prey in three words, what would they be?

Exciting, sarcastic, fun

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shadow Prey?

When Lucas first meets Shadow in the apartment

What does Richard Ferrone bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Richard Ferrone has become Lucas Davenport. His voice brings the right amount of edge, sarcasm and humor. He is a great narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes if only I could.

Any additional comments?

So happy that the old Prey novels have been released in this fashion with Richard Ferrone reading them. Hats off to John Sandford, great author.
