I have listened to 23 of 31 titles in the Prey series (second time for this one) and Night Prey fits the mold. A villain that is too terrible to imagine. A hero (Lucas) and cast of supporting heroes doing their best to bring the villain to justice. Character development in this one is good (Megan Connell) and the deductive reasoning is predictably over the top but it's also what we've come to expect from the good guys. Average listen for this series. Narrator Ferrone is once again extraordinary. If you are a Lucas Davenport fan, you will like this listen.

Lucas is recovering from the gunshot to his throat. He and Weather, the doctor that saved his life, are living together. A serial killer is stalking and killing women - most of whom he picks up at bookstores. He is also a thief that breaks into apartments in the night. During one of his break ins the killer, named Coop, becomes fixated on a beautiful sleeping woman, Sarah Jennings. She is all he can think about. A female detective, Meghan, is fixated on catching the serial killer. She has been tracking him for two years and was the first person to connect the dots. Now her time is running out. I enjoyed the descriptions of the police techniques in tracking down the identity of the criminals, and particularly was fascinated in the techniques Lucas, Del. Meghan, Sloan et al, used to follow Coop. I felt as if I were with them as they followed him around skywalks and buildings. Coop is a tough opponent - strong and wiley - but he has now gone quite mad. Sarah Jennings is also tough. She is smart and she wants to help bring Coop down. Good story.

The narrator of this series is fantastic and he does his usual great job with Night Prey and all the characters featured in this book.

The book was constantly moving forward with more details. The story had many twists and turns throughout. This was a great book to listen too. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Intriguing to the End!

This was a good book but the long pauses in the narration was almost torturous. The editors could have spliced it together better and it would have saved a couple hours in run time.

Good story but...

First off, Richard Ferrone owns the Davenport series. But I have to disagree with Sandford and his male fans. As clever as the crimes and their solving are, what really makes the writing work in my ear is the personalities, the humorous banter, the profanity – and Davenport's relationship to women. When it comes to women, Davenport is all in, and so this reader doesn't take kindly to sidelining of the women with whom he gets involved. The absolute best books of the series, in this listener's opinion, are the two early 1990s titles that feature the New York detective Lily Rothenburg ("Shadow Prey" and "Silent Prey"). BUT mine is a minority view. In interviews more than a decade later Sandford said he'd settled on a formula that yields books guaranteed sell at the second tier of popular crime writers, and this formula requires that he leave some established characters behind to make room for new ones. You get the idea that Sandford would NEVER disappoint his publishers by turning in a slightly quirkier book once in a while, even though by now he must be richer than all get-out. I can only imagine a book in which Sandford gives as much time to the web of relationships among his law enforcement cast as to the ins and outs of the bad guys' wiles and depravities. The first several books in the series had a slightly better balance, which made them exceptionally compelling entertainment. Maybe the older this talented storyteller has gotten, the less of an interest he has in libidinous men and women in the prime of life.

Great book as usual, and I love the chapter development of Lucas. Can’t wait to listen to the next book in this series.

Love the ending

Fantastic story start to finish…this series is always keeping me on the edge of the seat.

Attention to detail and knowing Davenport is always going to take one for the team.

This was another of the Sandford winners. Golly, I'm so glad there are plenty more to read by this amazing "story" man!

You have to love him!

This is the sixth in the Lucas Davenport series of thrillers.

The novel opens as most of this series do, with a graphic description of a murder being committed. The story then proceeds by alternating between the killer's point of view and Lucas'. There is never any doubt that Lucas will prevail and will survive the encounter but the twists and turns that will occur along the way are intriguing, clever enough to keep the reader turning pages long into the night. The killer in this one, Koop, is particularly chilling. His stalking of a victim that he selected on a whim is chilling and will surely cause many readers to check and recheck their curtains at night.

This series has a strong overall story arc, not so much that it is impossible to enjoy the books out of order but pronounced enough that reading the books in order does add to their enjoyment. Lucas Davenport began the series (RULES OF PREY) as a cold, calculating loner who never met a woman he did not want to bed. Over the course of the series he has matured, he has attempted and failed to establish a long term relationship but has now begun a new one with Weather, a woman he met in WINTER PREY. Could it be that this bad boy detective is growing up?

Richard Ferrone is great with the delivery of the story.
