Publisher's Summary

Stein on Writing provides immediately useful advice for writers of fiction and nonfiction, whether newcomers or accomplished professionals. As Sol Stein, renowned editor, author, and instructor, explains, "This is not a book of theory. It is a book of usable solutions, how to fix writing that is flawed, how to improve writing that is good, how to create interesting writing in the first place." With examples from his best sellers as well as aspiring students' writing, Stein offers detailed sections on characterization, dialogue, pacing, flashbacks, liposuctioning flab, the "triage" method of revision, using the techniques of fiction to enliven nonfiction, and more.

    "Stein On Communicating: Resonantly"

On our keyboards there are nubs on the f and j keys. Tiny finger grabbers to keep me from typing coded gibberish. Feel them for a moment. No… I mean you. Remember them under the pads of your fingers? Now, close your eyes and twirl them around in your mind. Their fact becomes your feeling. And that's what reading "Stein on Writing" is about.

About the craft of… Well he writes that after his or her work is released into the wild, the artist is dispensable. Feeling and fact, are all that swirl around then, like vapors which audiences inhale into their thought and emotional selves. Or they don't because the artist doesn't know how to make that happen either well… Or at all.

So Sol Stein teaches how to be a writer… And more importantly, how to be an audience. Does he do it well? Well enough that I've listened to "Stein on Writing" twice and I've ordered the book itself to mark up, scribble into, highlight, and dog-ear. So that next time I feel those tiny nubs actually under my pointy-fingers… I'll better make the keypad make me but not my writing… dispensable.

    Christopher Lee's perfect.

"Sol Stein: Master of His Craft"

This has been the best book on craft that I have come across in the vast genre of fiction craft books...IMO, it is better than any James Scott Bell &/or any other more contemporary writing book I've read.

Straightforward, easily absorbed, perfect depth of information & examples to illustrate concepts.

Read any Sol Stein book and you will see he is the best kind of teacher--he exemplifies in his writing what he teaches.

He seems to have mastered EVERY aspect of the business of writing.

Narration was perfect for the informative tone of the book

    Any additional comments?

One of the most important principles of good writing is "show, don't tell," but it can be hard to understand exactly what that means. This book is worth reading for his careful explanation of that distinction alone. The rest is gravy.

Of course, some of the rules offered need to be taken as suggestions. Hilariously, he says no book called Twilight could succeed.

Excellent information, clearly presented. This not only helped me improve what I have already written but also sparked new ideas to keep me writing new material. I'm going to listen again right now.

"Best book on writing ever. Lots of examples."
Where does Stein on Writing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is, by far, the best book on writing advice I have read. First of all it's so enjoyable and interesting to read that you can't put it down. Second, Sol gives lots of real examples: (e.g. "Here is one example, now here's a better way to word this.")

What other book might you compare Stein on Writing to and why?

Stephen King, "On Writing," is probably my next favorite, but Sol Stein has much more actual writing examples than King and is much more thorough.

What does Christopher Lane bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Oh, Christopher Lane is incredible. His voice is pleasant to listen to and gives the perfect emotion to the book so that you never start to "zone out." He also did "The Best Revenge" for Stein which I'm reading now. He is slightly more animated for this work on fiction and also wonderful.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

It's hard to pick just one. I loved the section on how he explained that he used to be part of a small theater where the director used to purposely give each actor a different script, and then turn them lose on the stage to cause confusion. And he said you should do this in your writing, because in real life we all have "different scripts."

    Any additional comments?

If you could only chose one book on writing to read, it should be this one.

    "Inspirational"

I don't normal bother to write reviews but this merits one. I've learned more from this audiobook than I have from 10 other texts. While predominately for the fiction writer, most of the concepts, as Stein explains, are just as applicable in non-fiction writing.

I don't believe there is anyone alive who couldn't learn at least something from this book.

    "The Midas Touch"
What did you like most about Stein on Writing?

I have bought loads of how to write books over the years - Stein on Writing is simply the best. Where other books can be vague or overgeneralised, Stein is clear and precise. Many how to write books have great ideas about what you need to do but give little clue as to how to do it - Stein richly illustrates the points he makes and develops exercises to enable the reader to make breakthroughs in their approach to writing.

What about Christopher Lane’s performance did you like?

Christopher Lane is the best reader for this type of book - one that you do not notice - instead you find yourself transported directly to Stein's writing.

    Any additional comments?

This book is not just a conventional outline of the usual requirements of good writing - instead it is a thoughtful and insightful collection of wise, hard won insights that can transform you as a writer. Stein has the Midas touch - this book can turn your work into writing gold.

    "Great Audiobook on Writing"

I have tried several audiobooks on writing and this is one of the best. The chapters are all subject related and this makes it easy to browse and listen again (which is well worth doing). The examples are very useful and the general approach very pragmatic.

    Highly recommended

Have you listened to any of Christopher Lane’s other performances? How does this one compare?

    Superb

    "Useful"

Overall it's a useful book, with lots of examples. Could have been shorter but the author elaborated on each topic a lot, sometimes more than needed. Narrator is ok for this type of books but I wouldn't listen fiction books narrated by him. Bad examples he reads in a raised voice, intentionally too abrupt, good examples he reads like someone is dying even when a scene is dramatic.

"The best book on writing by far"
Would you consider the audio edition of Stein on Writing to be better than the print version?

Don't know tell you when I get a print copy ... which I will

What other book might you compare Stein on Writing to, and why?

None, it's out on its own because of its publisher's and writer's approach, and its readability. For enjoyment it's up there with Stephen King's 'On Writing', however gems it may contain, that is autobiography about a writer.

What does Christopher Lane bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A couple of strange pronunciations. As a non-American, is that a Bostonian accent?

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Demands re-reading, again and again. Explains what you need to know ... the rest is up to you.

    Any additional comments?

A superb book. Crammed with knowledge gained from a life in books but has that fantastic factor ... it is a pleasure to read.
