Publisher's summary

The radio dramatisation of The Hobbit became a classic when it was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1968 and it continues to delight today.

Tolkien's famous saga, the prelude to the Lord of the Rings, has all the ingredients of fantasy and adventure: dwarves, elves, goblins and trolls, a fearsome dragon, a great wizard, a perilous quest, and a dramatic climax. At the centre is the unsuspecting hero Bilbo Baggins, a home-loving unambitious Hobbit who is suddenly thrust into the biggest, indeed the only adventure of his life.

A fine example of excellent storytelling

What did you love best about The Hobbit (Dramatised)?

I loved the sense of nostalgia that I got while listening to this. It brought the characters and events to life using very little special effects.

Any additional comments?

If you have enjoyed the books and the recent films, have a listen to this to remind yourself of what is essentially one of the classic stories of our time. Its amazing how this production covered the story so excellently in four hours when Hollywood needs about seven hours of CGI to impress. Tolkien originally told this story to his children at bedtime and I imagine that this version of the tale remains very close to that experience.

Pure and Untouchable Classic.

Anyone that doesn’t give this 5 stars is too knit picky and uptight for their own good! It was wonderfully done and superb in every way possible! A classic tale performed by the very best ensemble of people ever put together! BRAVO and it NEVER disappoints, no matter how many times you replay it. Don’t let any weak or unfairly reviews rob you of this audible delight!

great story, dramatization could be better

Therecare some parts that are too loud and the voices are kind of annoying from the very beginning, but the story is great, so it's worth listening to.

Short but Good

It took a little while to get used to the songs, but that was part of the original book and should be included. It was entertaining, fun, and a pretty good dramatization of the book. If anything it was a little short and glossed over the details, but I enjoyed it. It would be good material for a car trip, especially with kids.

Worth the audio struggle

Excellent adaptation of the classic! Audio suffers because it's based on the only surviving copy of the radio broadcast. Worth playing games with the volume knob.

A timeless classic with voice

I came into this adaptaion of the Hobbit knowing little of the world of middle-earth and I was hooked in an instant! What made this books come to life was the way the actors perfectly protrayed their characters in a spot on performance of the tale of a Hobbit named Bilbo who learns to rise above his lowly charcater and win back treasure for dwarves and a wizard named Gandolf on one of the greatest adventures of his life. I was never much into Lord of the Rings (a little to rpic for my taste) but this book was perfect for being more lighthearted but still fun and adventurous, I strongly recomend you download this book.
