Publisher's summary

The year: 2018.

The place: The wastelands of an apocalyptic world once known as North America. A virulent strain of rabies found within infected meat is slowly but surely poisoning the nomadic survivors left behind after the world-wide apocalypse of 2012.

There are no cattle left; only deer, fox, wolves, horses, and other various forms of local wildlife remain as a source of meat. The consumption of the infected meat results in a high fever, severe dehydration, cold sweats, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and eventually a state of psychosis, accompanied by random acts of physical violence.

Entrepreneurs of the nearly dead sue the virus-induced, zombie-like victims as gladiators in a makeshift arena filled with bloodthirsty spectators, and the newly-deceased are added to the food chain.

There is no longer a medium between the living and the dead...only a real-life purgatory known as the wastelands.

Felt too slow and hard to follow

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

More action, I felt like there wasn't much going on... I listened to this in bed, on several dog walks and each time I felt bored... It didn't seem like much was actually happening. It also jumped around a lot and was somewhat hard to follow.

Would you ever listen to anything by David Boyer again?

I'd definitely give him another shot.

What about Eric Weaver’s performance did you like?

He did a good job and was a pleasure to listen to

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Interesting story build up that took too long considering it's only 2+ hours.

A little disjointed, but enjoyable to listen to.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The only issue I had was the story seemed to jump around a bit within clear delineation. I really enjoyed the individual stories as they popped up, but at times it was difficult to follow who was being talked about or even tell if it was a collection of short stories or all one cohesive tale. Still, it was entertaining and at the end of the day that made it worth it.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It was interesting, I just feel like it could have been elaborated on a bit more. It felt a bit short as a whole.

What does Eric Weaver bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

At first I wasn't jiving with his narration. After about 15-20 minutes I got into it. Overall I think he was good just needed to acclimate to his style.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Possibly. It depends on what the finished product looks like when the trailers come out!

Just ok

This book was way too slow and the concept is already over fantasizes. I was hoping for there to be more originality, or there to be more action. I loved the narrators voice and think that if there had to be someone for this type of book they hit the nail on the head!

anthology

I love a good anthology. this book is set in the future were basically there isn't much of a line between life and death any more. I really enjoyed the read and would love to see another book.
