Publisher's Summary

This is a world divided by blood - red or silver.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare's potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance - Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart...

3/5

It’s a well written, well paced book but the lack of acting in the woman’s voice pulled me out of it, she seemed afraid to yell or seem distressed in distressing scenes, and I personally couldn’t invest in the characters as they seemed one dimensional except for Maven. I never feared for anyone’s life and felt I knew where the story was going bar one twist. The romance seemed weak and forced on certain characters and in saying that characters were wishy washy in their motives, they flipped and flopped depending on how the plot needed them to be not because of who they were.

But I’m glad other people liked it and I can see how people would, just not for me.

Enthralling, twist and turns, excellently narrated

Wow!! If you're a fan of books like The Hunger Games, read this now!!
If you're new to the genre, read this now!
Fast paced, tight with detail, packed with intrigue and richly written characters.
Kept me enthralled with twists and turns, all the way through.
I mostly listened via audio, the narrator injects emotions perfectly.
THAT FREAKING ENDING!!

In the spirit of twilight...

All in all, this book was... OK... I found the characters were not very well developed and the main character was annoying in a look-at-me-I'm-so-uniquely-special and look-at-me-all-the-boys-love-me way. While the topic is obviously not twilight, I did draw comparisons in my head to it, as I found the protagonist rather self centered, manipulative and two dimensional and there was a love triangle (possibly will develop into a rectangle in the future books!) that was annoying. The other characters are fairly standard but do the job. I am sure that Cal will set some hearts a flutter with his perfection with a minor but acceptable flaw, but I can't say that he did anything for me.

The storyline is alright. I found it a bit predictable, but it kept my attention well enough and I did get to the end of the book without too much bother. There were some twists that, while not a total surprise, kept interest up.

I also found the world it was set in quite odd. The author seemed to draw from high fantasy GoT style worlds and futuristic dystopian worlds, throwing them into the blender with a hint of steampunk in the mix!

In short, if you don't mind your protagonists being precious little teenagers and want something that is mildly engaging for a short time, this is a mildly engaging bit of fantasy that you can escape with for a while, but, if I were you, I wouldn't shift it to the top of your wish list.

If you liked the Hunger Games you'll love this!

Incredibly good. Story, narration, the lot. all wonderful. Can't wait to listen to book number 2!

While the story reflects a hunger games style world and character scenario, the story is original. There are certainly parallels but they are both wonderful books. For those who enjoyed the Hunger Games series this will be for you. I don't mean that it's a cheap rip off but only that if you enjoy one, I'm positive you'll enjoy the other. Wonderful intriguing story with so many twists and turns.

Makes you think, makes you question everything and keeps you interested. No slow moments. It moves along nicely.

A young adult book? Sure. But If I wasn't told that before I couldn't have figured it out. Nothing child like about it. The main character just happens to be 17... at 23 myself, I adored it. It's the fantasy novel I've been waiting for and I am so excited that there are more books. I bought the second one straight away after finishing it.

Worth every cent.

Excellent!

The narrator was amazing and the storyline itself is engaging, if not a little cliché. I highly recommend this book!

Surprisingly good

When I read the synopsis I figured this would be something I'd like but it turned out I was really surprised at how good it was. I'm definitely off to see if there's a sequel!

Could have been better

Fun-ish, but dragged on. I saw many of the twists coming. Fine for background listening.

Very Derivative

Well written and paced, but same characters and tropes from other teen dystopias. Enjoyable, but unoriginal.

I had no idea what I was getting into

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend without a doubt. This takes the stereotype for young adult novels at the moment and changes it very dramatically in a way that is interesting.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite character was probably a mixture. I really liked Maven, but I also liked Kilorn.
Here's why: Maven was a complex, interesting character who wasn't what you expected at any point in the story. Genuinely likable and safe feeling. This went far deeper because of SPOILERS.
Kilorn is sweet and the typical best friend character and he does exactly the opposite of what was expected of that character and he doesn't just serve to advance Mare's narrative but has a far bigger role.

What does Amanda Dolan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I enjoyed the voice actress. I probably would have experienced it in much the same way but I found her way of explaining the story very engaging and interesting. There was a lot of emotion in her performance which you don't always find with narrators.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it was. Sadly, I kept falling asleep but somehow that was better. I listened to it every change I got; on the way to work, on the tube, walking home from work, on my lunch break at work, when I went to bed...

Any additional comments?

Totally not what I expected. A nice change, I cannot wait to see where this leads.

Great narration! Great story! Kept me hooked till the end. A bit cringe at some points (but totally expected of a young adult narrative)

Great new series!

I loved it! I work from home and usually listen to YouTube narrations or stick something on Netflix, so this was a great change of pace. The narration was great, and I loved the story!

I've never really been into YA fantasy stories but this one had the right amount of action, mystery, danger and romance! Can't wait to listen to the next book in the series!

Brilliant and Captivating Story

I picked up this book after jut finishing the Vampire Academy series and prior to that I’ve read the Mortal Instruments stories as well.
I’m my opinion this series is just as good, with twists as turns you don’t see coming it keeps you reading on and on. I never wanted to put the book down. Very much looking forward to the next instalment.

It was eh

The story was okay, not the best nor the worst I've ever read. It was eh. Romance seemed forced, rushed and unrealistic. The plot twist near the end kept me hooked enough to finish the book, but I don't think I'll be continuing the series. The narration, however, was very good.

Excellent!

I thoroughly enjoyed this whole book! I was into it from the start. None of this waiting around to get to the good part, it was ALL good. The narrator was the best I've listened to as well. She very subtlety changes her voice for each character so that you know who's speaking bit not so much that it's over-played and silly. I've already got the next book and I'll be startng it right now!

BookBonanza Reviews - Red Queen

I'll be honest, this is my first ever audio book and I was very hesitant to do it. Nothing can replace a physical book for me, but this blew me away.

I was expecting a monotone, boring, mechanical read but was given anything but! This was such an amazing audio book, I was hooked, not just on the narrating but also the book.

I absolutely loved it! I finished it in 24 hours! What a good book and narration.

Great book! but ...

It's a captivating book from the beginning. Some great plot twists. But sometimes a little predictable, and corny. Cringe worthy at times but overall the book is well written and the audio side was also great a few laugh worthy accents but overall a great performance

Amazing book!!!

The book was really good, I enjoyed every second of it and I loved how the writer chose to write about a very sensitive topic like equality and show us the importance of respecting others
