Publisher's Summary

Can one gentle Highland soldier woo Victorian London's most scandalous lady assassin, or will they both be destroyed in the attempt?

New York Times best-selling author Gail Carriger presents a stand-alone romance novella set in her popular steampunk universe full of manners, spies, and dainty sandwiches.

Lady Preshea Villentia, the Mourning Star, has four dead husbands and a nasty reputation. Fortunately, she looks fabulous in black. What society doesn't know is that all her husbands were marked for death by Preshea's employer. And Preshea has one final assignment.

It was supposed to be easy, a house party with minimal bloodshed. Preshea hadn't anticipated Captain Gavin Ruthven - massive, Scottish, quietly irresistible, and...working for the enemy. In a battle of wits, Preshea may risk her own heart - a terrifying prospect, as she never knew she had one.

Delicate sensibilities? Contains men pleasing women, and ladies who know what they want and ask for it, sometimes in detail. May also contain plaid, appearances from dandy vampires, and the strategic application of leather gloves.

    "Wonderful as Ever"

I've read, or listened to, every Gail Carriger book in the finishing school universe and this one it's just as thoughtful and witty as the rest. Lavington does a wonderful job narrating, making a great book just that much better. I look forward to more delightfully deadly novellas.

    "Loved it!"

I love everything she writes but this one is an instant fave.
Only complaint is that it's over too soon. Can't wait for the next one!

    "Consent is Sexy."

I am a long time fan of Ms Carriger's works so I dare say I'm rather biased. But this adventure was stunning from start to finish. (So long as one has achieved their majority or has a -very- progressive parent or guardian)

I'll start by saying that while this is a treat for those of us who have read the finishing school series, that is hardly necessary to fully enjoy this novella. I was however incredibly impressed with the way the narrator managed to capture Presha's cadences from those books. Her voice is perfectly suited to the characters portrayed here and her Scottish brogue does not disappoint.

This has less action than you might expect, but that is hardly a lack. This is primarily a romance, and an incredibly erotic one. I would not suggest listening in public with headphones if you are at all prone to blushing. Presha's inner turmoil is explored with sympathy, without allowing to drift into the realms of the maudlin, and her snark and manipulation show Ms. Carriger's trademark humour and sense of the ridiculous.

For the sake of mystery you have to listen to the book to discover why I chose this title for my review but trust me when I say it is relevant.

    "Delightfully twisted."
Would you consider the audio edition of Poison or Protect to be better than the print version?

It was a good story, but as an audiobook it's excellent. The reader does a truly smashing job of it.

"Don't judge the rest of her books by this one"

I have read all bar one of Gail Carriger's books based in this 'world'. This is my least favourite; I will try in this review to be as objective as possible though. Maybe I am influenced by having enjoyed the last book so much that I was bound to be a bit disappointed with this one.

It is a very well written book with a clear storyline and brief appearances from 2 well-known characters from other books., I would describe it more as a romance book with espionage rather than the other way round. It does deal well with a sensitive issue - a woman being allowed to make her own choices in terms of intimacy and sexual activity after previous lack of choice and unpleasant experiences.

Do take note of the warning in the book synopsis. If you don't want to listen to descriptions of sexual activity then don't buy this book.

If this is your first Gail Carriger book and you think it doesn't have much depth of plot then try another before giving up on her as an author. It's not a bad book, it's just that her books usually have a more substantial storyline.

As for the reader, OK, but not exceptional - a few mis-pronunciations.

Still looking forward to another book from Gail Carriger even though I have been a bit negative about this one.
