Frayed: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse

Edited by Monique Happy Editorial Services

139,000 words

Frayed, Book Nine in the best-selling Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse series, picks up three weeks after Ghosts, Book Eight, left off.

Outbreak - Day One

Like a fragile house of cards in a hurricane, presidents, premiers, entire governments and their ruling bodies disappeared instantly. Some had ensconced themselves in deep underground bunkers or remained holed up in fortified strongholds, but history would tell that most had been swallowed up by the dead - never to be heard from again.

Since that last normal Saturday in July, the Omega virus has indiscriminately delivered destruction and death to all four points of the compass - the latter having recently been visited upon former Delta Force soldier Cade Grayson and the small group of civilian survivors making their home in the subterranean compound near Eden, Utah.

In the three weeks since mounting a brash rescue mission to a zombie-infested Los Angeles and returning home to find lives of loved ones hanging in the balance, Cade has occupied himself with runs outside the wire to procure supplies necessary to ride out what the Farmer's Almanac predicts will be a long, cold winter.

As Cade and his team seize an unforeseen opportunity provided by the plummeting temperatures, he quickly realizes they are in a race against time - and nature's fickle whims. And as they all labor to make the most of this gift horse, little does he know, even as Old Man Winter covers the valley with the first snow of the season, the infamous Mister Murphy is about to hurl a wicked curveball his way. Because like the fabled butterfly effect - a single action from the past is about to set in motion a chain of events that could at once spell doom for Eden as a sanctuary and scatter the entire group into the wind.

Come along and see if our tenacious little group will survive the zombie apocalypse for one more precious day.

Voiced better, transition story

Any additional comments?

So this is the second book with the new narrator. Adam Paul is no Chris Patton, but Adam definitely fixed the voice issues with Duncan and gave a slight edge enhancement to Cade. The overall story was definitely used as a transition to pick up what will likely be a key character and to have some wild card characters in the back pocket. The last two minutes gave the cliff hanger for the next major story line...

Another great installment in a continuing tale.

Where does Frayed rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

On the top shelf. The new narrator Adam Paul has made the characters his own after taking over from the previous artist. This book had lots of accents that were delivered perfectly. By now the characters Chesser has developed have quirks and foibles that make this group so very relatable. From battling addiction, sibling rivalry, to stealing a few precious moments of joy in a messed up situation, this tale proves it's not just a zombie novel, but a story about a group that has become a family fighting to thrive against all odds. Highly recommend this series, and can't wait for more as Adam Paul catches up to Shawn Chesser's written works.

What other book might you compare Frayed to and why?

Closest work to compare it to would be The Walking Dead. Mostly because of the focus on character development and fleshing out the survivors into people you care about, and are invested in. Plus, lots of zombie insanity!

Which character – as performed by Adam Paul – was your favorite?

The old couple in the farmhouse were just voiced so perfectly. Not huge characters in the overall tale, but voiced with an attention to detail that was rock solid.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Teabag... teabag...teabag...

Trust me, get to that line in the book and you'll cry laughing.

Any additional comments?

The next audiobook release cannot happen fast enough for me!

The best yet!

I don't know if my tears are from the end of this installment of the story or the fact that I've caught up to the end of Mr. Chesser's books that are available on Audible. I will be on the edge of my seat until the next one comes out!
