Publisher's Summary

When you've been accused of kidnapping an emperor, and every enforcer in the city wants your head, it's hard to prove yourself an honorable person and even harder to earn an imperial pardon. That doesn't keep Amaranthe Lokdon and her team of outlaws from trying. When athletes start disappearing from the Imperial Games, they may finally have an opportunity to show the emperor that they're on his side. If she and her comrades can get to the bottom of such a public mystery, they're sure to get the credit.

But plans go awry when Amaranthe's own men start plotting against each other, the new ally she'd hoped to acquire tries to turn her in, and her best fighter-and closest friend-disappears. Maybe getting involved wasn't such a good idea after all....

Another Great Lindsay Buroker Story

I love Lindsay Buroker's adventures, and I can always count on a good, entertaining ride. I didn't give this book five stars only because it took so long to really draw me in, and I could have put the book down a few times. I did, in fact. I also think some of the repartee took away from the story, didn't add anything new, and slowed things down too much. I read part of it and listened to the audio as well. I really dislike the way the audio narrator does the Maldynado voice. It's way too pretentious. I found myself making faces every time I heard it. Not the good faces. The rest of it, though, was very well done. I loved the first books in the series and have some other Buroker novels I can't wait to get into. She's definitely one of my favorite authors.

this narrator was awful

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No, not at all

What didn’t you like about Starla Huchton’s performance?

She made the heroine Amaranthe a snot and Maldynado sound very gay, which not have been a problem if he had been. That's all the farther I listened, just a few pages because I couldn't stand it. She was ruining a good story.

Any additional comments?

This is a great book. Save yourself the trouble and don't get 'professional' narration.

Enjoyable

I recently finished reading the kindle versions of book 1 and 2 – As I started book 3 I got sick. I was pleased to see the audio version of the book available at a reduced cost because I owned the kindle version already.

The first 3 books in this series are entertaining with an interesting world setting that mixes sci fi, steam punk and mystery together to make a wonderfully enjoyable read.
If you want to start this series, book 1, The Emperor’s Edge is available free for down load for your kindle or other popular e-readers. Start there for best results

In this book, our unlikely set of heroes are looking into the disappearance of men and women in the Emperor’s games. As things are likely to do, matters go from bad to worse before everything works out in the end. I must say the last chap is my fav – the entire garden scene is breath taking, such a tease but it will make me buy the next book to see what happens next.

Regarding the Narrator - I wasn't sure I was going to like Starla Huchton's reading of the story - mainly because I had voices in my head already for the characters from reading the e-versions of the first two books, but it didn't take long for me to really enjoy listening to Starla's work.

Lindsay Buroker is becoming a firm favourite.

I only wish more of this authors' books were on Audible. Great steampunk cross fantasy author.

Not to be missed if you like steampunk/fantasy books.

All the books I've listened to so far have left me wanting more. My only complaint is that the few final books in this series are not on Audible, therefore to finish the story you need to buy the books from Amazon. I'd happily buy them on Audible, and I really hope they're in the works.

I hadn't heard the narrator before, and she does a pretty good job. The only let down is a common complaint I have with a lot of Audible downloads - and that is that the engineering quality is often lacking, and you can tell where splicing has taken place with some of the editing. That loses this review a star rating on performance. Not because of the narrator though, if it was based purely on her performance it would rank a full rating.

Apart from that, I have got totally hooked on what Lindsay Buroker writes, and seriously hope the rest of her books will soon become audio books.
